Mine makes a whine noise as I'm accelerating, this is due to the 'solid' lower mount, nothing beats a bit of gearbox whine !!
Could it be an air leak some where? Like a whistle sort of noise?
Or start yoru car, and get someone to listen under the engine bay while it's still cold, or whenever it happens, and try to locate where it's coming from. You will then pretty much be able to know what it is.
If it's cambelt side, then could be either camblet, alternator belt, idles pulley, tensioner or waterpump(but I very much doubt it's this)
Or other side of the engine could be clutch, or within the gearbox?

I get that often, usually when I am going slow up and down gears. For example changing at like 2000rpm when accelerating very slowly (usually when no petrol!)

Mines does this as well when it's cold on the 1.1l, whinning but not like a remote control car.
The 16v does it too but it's the plastic cover touching the cambelt cos if you push it in you can feel it rubbing and obvoiusly get's louder, this sounds more like a remote control car!!

if ur belts are whining, get a wax crayon and apply it to the inside of the belt, it helps it grip better and stops the whining. hope this helps, its a cheap fix

check the belts tension .. find the longest run and see if u can twist it in the middle more the 1/4 of a turn... if the cam is loose tho (tensioner etc) then you will get a poor idle and a poor drive..
if its the fan belt it will squeek
if the fan belt is to tight then it will sound like a remote car since the alternator bushes are wearing.. if this is the case loosen it
