a Clio 182 at my local renault dealers,
now Im so dead certain that I want a Clio 172 Cup,
jesus christ theyre nice cars.
Really expected it to be all rattly and loose like a Saxo...
boy was I wrong.
Really impressed,
Await a new car thread!
.....Anyone know anything I should look for?
Leeroy/Cal?
....also! Spoke to the dude about servicing etc,
they reckon £850 for a cambelt change,
does this sound ridiculous to people!??!!?
smiith
3rd March 2008, 17:34

i drove my mates 182, such fun cars to throw about
kylie

3rd March 2008, 17:36
You disapoint me! And I thought you was cool and going for a Ibiza Cupra, baaahhhhh.
French turd. ;)
AlexR
3rd March 2008, 17:38
I disagree. I didn't like the 182 i drove at all. Seats were nice, that's about it. Didn't feel at all well put together, and this was one with under 10k on the clock.
I just know french cars from previous renaults that mates have owned, they are far more obscure to work on, and require more work than PSA cars, plus they aren't actually that well engineered either.
Your money and your choice though. I preferred to get back into my vts and drive home after driving the 182...

3rd March 2008, 17:42
french shite
wouldnt catch me in a french car

3rd March 2008, 18:18
Not regretted buying my 172 at all, although mine is the FF, so can't comment on the cup, but from what I have heard about them they are great cars !
Watch out for Dashboard rattle about 3k revs, quite common....
Tupps
3rd March 2008, 18:25
I'd have a 172 tbh
Nice cars
AlexR
3rd March 2008, 18:41
Yup the dreaded dashboard rattle. More road noise through the front doors than my vts, i did have sound deadening though. Kickback through the steering, interior build quality still poor, everything just clipped together.
Yeah low down power is great, top end is a bit better than a vts. But it's hardly worlds ahead.

3rd March 2008, 19:04
182's are nice.
maynard
3rd March 2008, 19:25

Karl
3rd March 2008, 19:29

Graeme
3rd March 2008, 20:08

only reason is the exhaust on the 182 are better :P
Mikey
3rd March 2008, 20:09
would have got a new clio sport. if it wasnt for my insurance
shooorn94
3rd March 2008, 20:09
I would love a 172, determined for my next car. How roomy are the front seats I heard they are more cramped than the saxo :panic:
Easty
3rd March 2008, 20:15
My dash rattle is quite bad about 3k, especially when the radio is off...
There is a way to sort it i think but i cba !
Karl
3rd March 2008, 20:45
lol cool.
all this id rather have a 182 + 197 talk is just ghey, 182 as a rough rule are 2,500 pounds more for the same mileage, which is a rip off.
and 197 is 15k brand new.
so also a no no.

3rd March 2008, 22:41
renaultsport clios are awesome little things, although EP3 Type-R's have dropped in price recently, and after driving one I'm a bit of a sucker for VTEC myself. 172 Cup in blue I saw last week at a garage, looked the shizz tbh...
(and yes Ryan, I know Civics are Jap Crap and whatever lmao :P)
Robb
3rd March 2008, 23:14
dont really understand all the differences between each model.
how come you test drove a 182 if you want a 172?
leeroybrown
3rd March 2008, 23:56

More like 300-400
Make sure at 36k it had the aux belt and tension done
50k is when timing belt should be done

Thats loads mate, hang on til you're 20, if you have 3yrs NcB by then (or even 2) insuring one should be peanuts... got quoted £1550 on a 172 Cup when I get my 1 yrs NCB in May, 20 yrs old and only 2 years experience. Hence this summer I *might* go browsing :P

A renaultsport Clio is wayy more expensive to insure than a VTS I find, well for young drivers anyway. Last July when I got my VTS I was quoted 2k for the saxo but 3.4k for a phase 1 Clio 172 of a similar price. No idea why the gap is that big..
Karl
4th March 2008, 09:18
Robb, the 182 obviously has more bhp.
but bhp per tonne, the 172 cup has more than a 182 with all the extras.
Mark51
4th March 2008, 09:22
alot of people say that the seating position is poor but i quite liked it when i test drove one the other week.
make sure that there are no warning lights on at any point as renults and electrics dont go well together
Karl
4th March 2008, 09:22
Leeroy, did your 182 have a clicky accelerator pedal?
that thing was addictive.
Cant wait to own one now!
ty for advice Mark51,
thats one of the reasons im getting a Cup, to avoid all the electrical fault bills, lol.

4th March 2008, 09:24
Cant go wrong with clios they rule

4th March 2008, 09:25
Whats Insurance like Karl? I was considering a 172 before the Zetec, I could afford to get one....but the Insurance was 2.5k fully comp.
Karl

Nice cars. i was looking at one when i get 2 yncb and am 20 in may but insurance will still be stupid on one of these :(
Hanuman
4th March 2008, 10:53
thought they looked quite good, tried driving one and it was to small, im 6'1 and quite big built. also driving home yesterday seen an orangey ret looking one a silver one and blue, 1 was a cup the others 182s i think (twin exhausts) and all driven by hot ladies... then i seen a lad driving one i thought woo thankfully it isnt just a girls car.... front of the grill (SPORT) chrome crappy badge from eghey..... rear.... LEXUS LIGHTS, thats ruined the idea of getting one forever
Karl
4th March 2008, 11:40
Hanuman, theres a lot of awful Saxos out there,
so you cant rule out clios cos you saw one with Lexarse lights?
Karl
5th March 2008, 20:40
After being Disheartened twice,
I noticed a cheeky hidden Advert on Pistonheads.
;)
Update tomorrow @ 6pm hahaha :D
.....rang the guy up, turned out he was 10 mins drive from my own front door.
Has a nice KTec Stealth exhaust...
30,300 miles.
Full renault history,
cambelts already been changed (thank god, was quoted £850 by renault)
;) generally good condition.
on a 52 plate. :D

Japman
6th March 2008, 10:01
if its forged and has a bigger turbo then hell yea
all depends on spec
if its just a 5e bottom end then no
sorry read it wrong, though u was on about alic starlet
the clio ?
No it wasnt quicker, but there was only a 3-4 car lengh in it
bar in mined thats at .8 boost, but still its one quick car
Scattle
6th March 2008, 10:04
Gav what can the starlet safely run @ before the turbo will go?
Japman
6th March 2008, 10:15
i normal CT9 turbo which is the standard one can be run at 1 bar safe with supporting mods
a hybrid, depending on spec can be run up to 1.2-1.3 bar safe
it all depends on other fueling mods and air mods
Karl
6th March 2008, 10:22
will get pics up for you tonight/tomorrow.
8h til I pick her up ;)
Jungle_Jim
6th March 2008, 10:26
nice one buddy. you wont be disappointed. the standard spec on the clio is much better than the saxo and the whole car feels more solid and put together better. i would have loved a sport but the insurance was too high

Karl
6th March 2008, 11:13
Gatesy, didnt realise you bought a GT! nice one.
smart little cars.
Yeah Adam agreed,
Im gonna be looking to buy in a year / year and a half.
(when the clio is paid ~)
In that time between me and the missus (if all goes well between us)
we should have 8-12k deposit,
she just got a payrise, so we can borrow up to 140k between us.
Screw that though,
nice little 2 bedroom house with a drive on a reasonable house for 135k,
would suit me down to the ground.
...Saying that, Ill be selling the Clio when looking for a house and going back to a cheap to fix/run/repair car such as the Saxo/106. :)
Japman
6th March 2008, 11:14
thats fooking good lad
Gatesy

Karl
6th March 2008, 11:22
Yeah quality, looks good Gatesy. Quite like those little C2's myself.
Whats good Japman?
Clio'll be worth prob 4k+ in a year and a half, considering I wont do more than 10k miles in it over 18 months.
so that should give me a nice bitta cash for a runaround Furio/VTR (to save on insurance) and prob 2k towards the house deposit/fund.
Karl
6th March 2008, 11:23

6th March 2008, 11:32
£1300 isnt too bad, i got a quote off confused.com and it messed up, for some reason it stored my dads details giving me a quote of £495 :) i thought this was too cheap so went direct to the site that gave that quote and it came back at £2895 :(. i did work out thought that the money it would have taken to buy the equivalent reg / mileage clio as mine and a years insurance would allow me to buy my car, do all the mods and run it with tax and insurance for 5 years lol

Screw that man, the amount of people that go there that drive like bellends, dont wanna hurt the new born Clio. :)
Cant stop thinking about it.
Days really lagging, so eager to get it...
cant wait to feel that VVT kick @ 2,500 and at 5,000.
Feels so much more solid on regular roads than my Saxo too.

little bit more spec would be good.
mileage etc?
not seen a trophy sell for any less than 8k,
was only 8k due to 45k miles.
*dribbles* trophies are actually insanely gorgeous.

no.... ive got VTR need a 182 cup!.... never mind just going to wait til im abit older and can afford insurance:P
Good lad, you knows it makes sense... so much more solid than my GTi, I don't think you can compare the build quality tbh nor the quickness... regardless of opinions, Ive owned both. Mine is around 34k and is due the aux belt and tensioner kit changing, although Renault say get the cambelt done then too.
The right breathing mods, ITG Maxo or Simota Carbon (I reccommend, sounds amazing) and a decent exhaust and you'll have a very nippy car milado.
If you haven't already get yourself signed up to Cliosport, there's servicing guides and faq's on there that are really useful. Bic the lad with the quick 106 is busy making pre preg carbon fog inserts, rear bumper inserts and splitters etc for the 172/182. Need any help give me or the ginger one a shout :y:

yeah, im gonna get my aux belt changed around 34-36k :)

I drove one before. was not that impressed to be fair. Felt fast and stable but I would not buy one, would push the boat out on my next car. Nice cars though, I'll give it 4 months before you board again :P

the trophy?
Sounds about right tbh
But then again it does have all the whiteline anit roll bar which is a massive improvement over standard
Standard 1*2 full fats probably aren't much quicker than an 'S' with zorst/mani etc... A Cup with the same mods is in a differnet league. Its like comparing an 'S' to a CTR, a standard Cup is actually fractionally quicker than the CTR in a straight line. Iirc
