if this was not working properly would it cause the engine to stall when ticking over and cut out while driving. seems to missfire then the power dies and wont rev.

Yeah could be that, also check the coolant temp sensor..:y:

Yeah it could do that, change the IAC, CTS etc should sort it out :) Maybe a servie would be in order while your in there :)
