Just after a quick bit of advice here, have done a search but it didn't throw up what I was looking for.

I've bought a Saxo VTS, '98 model, with a huge leak coming from the head gasket where the oil gallery is. Now I've just had a quote for £150 for a new head gasket set and new bolts, which almost made me fall off my chair.... Question is this, can I get away with just changing the headgasket, or will I need to change the manifold gaskets too? I'll be carrying out all the work too.

I'm pretty sure I know what the answer is going to be, and I'm pretty sure I'm not going to like it, but thought I'd see what you seasoned VTS owners know first.

If your changing the head gasket then you`ll need to budget for a new cambelt maybe tensioner as well, plus exhaust gaskets & ideally have the head re-skimmed.Actually on the VTS there isn`t a gasket as such it`s just sealant(people correct me if i`m wrong)

Your confusing the rocker cover with the head!

Have you tried eurocarparts or GSF (German Swedish & French) for the parts??

Yeah, Europarts come up with £130 for the head set (no bolts), and GSF don't seem to have a head set, just the actual head gasket itself.

Just to add I will be doing the cam belt/oil filter at the same time too.

These are the rough prices of what I'd change:

Headgasket - £40 from Citroen
Exhaust gasket - £10 from Citroen
Headbolts - (x10 @ £2.50 a bolt) from Citroen
Cambelt - £10 from gsf
Waterpump - £35 from gsf
Idler pulley (MAYBE) - £30 from gsf
Alternator belt (MAYBE) - £10 from gsf

Maybe oil + spark plugs + fuel filter - £40 ??

Total: £150 (+£40) in parts - then maybe around £150 in fitting, or do it yourself, isn't that hard, just look at the haynes manual + there's a guide on here somewhere.

If you do it yourself, it has costed you £150, and you've replaced pretty much everything major, so trouble free motoring for next 50k.

Just what I'd do - if you are close to me I can do it for you, should be able to do it in a day (unless head neds skimming - around £40 at an engineering firm)

make sure it is infact the head gasket and not the rocker cover gaskets that have gone :y:

If its not leaking a huge amount i would leave it alone tbh..

Its common for TU's to leak here at the corner of the head above the altenator, its the oil gallery seal..My car does it abit..

Dont bother getting a new HG if its not leaking much..
