View Full Version : Something wrong with the car! *update #10*

I've done a search and im still not sure on it though :y:. Been looking at Furio Al's sticky on rev problems etc.
My car seems to idle weird sometimes (revs lightly and then under revs), sounds as though I am tapping the accelerator etc. And also when I am driving along, it seems to judder occasionally. I put my foot down on the accelerator and it doesnt do anything....judders....then goes again.
Its been doing it when pulling out of junctions etc and could be quite dangerous if it did it at the wrong time, wrong place.
Could it be a fueling problem or....?
Rep will be given :y:

Mine does this too. Can be quite scary having a loss of power especially when you need it, pulling out of junctions etc...
Someone suggested to me that it could be the fuel filter blocked. The previous owner never did a thing to maintain the car in 2 years and the last service history stamp was 25k miles ago!!! If i find out it's not the problem then i don't have a clue what to look at next? :(

Tell me about it....its enough to make you lay something warm and brown in your pants :homme:. I thought it could be the fuel filter. It had a big service not so long ago but dont think it was done. And I ran pretty low on fuel the other week before I topped up again. Maybe all the sedement and shit at the bottom has clogged the filter up.
Anyone want to shine any light on the matter :P

Now you mention it it does happen much more when there's hardly any petrol left. Don't get me wrong there's still enough to do about 30 miles but as soon as i fill it up again the problems ease. They're still there but no way near as bad :S

Lvw? Yea i'm pretty sure its the fuel filter. Its going to the garage next week to have the rear lowered anyway so I will ask the guy about it (providing it dosnt get worse). Is there anyway of getting all the shit out the bottom or what?

You can take the fuel tank off,but its not easy job!! unless you work in garage with a ramp.Im sure you can get some petrol cleaning aditive to put in your petrol tank which will clean every thing for you matey?? ide try that first.....

Well....I havnt done anything to it yet (its going to the garage on tuesday to be looked at aswell as being lowered).
Anyone know what this could be?
It sometimes Idles strange (like someone is tapping to accelerator....it isnt over revving though)
It jolts sometimes and there is a high lag on the accelerator when it starts jolting (sometimes).
Yesterday....I parked up for a minute - tried to start it again and it wouldn't start. Just a urghurghurghurgh. Tried it 5 times then thought...its broken down on me :(. Tried it again but started rev'ing the accelerator - it then started and a massive cloud of smoke came out the back. It sounded pretty bad on start up though!
Its generally running like a piece of shit - no engine management is on though?
It starts fine normally. Just starts playing up accasionally.
Anyone know what it is?

OMG I couldn't have put it better myself. That's exactly the same as what mine's doing!!! If you find a 'Cure' Please let me know  It's driving me crazy not knowing what's causing it:panic: If i find a 'Cure' I'll let you know too:y:

when my vts did this i thought it was the fuel pump as it feels like a lack of fuel-
if the revs change and its not actually cutting out at idle it wont be the coil pack. I think if it was a lack of fuel the revs wouldnt change up and down it would be more of a spluttering...
that leaves it down to the engine management getting the wrong info which is either the lambda sensor or the map sensor- on mine it was the map sensor.
I did get mine on a diagnostics machine after going through a lot of second guessing, changing the fuel filter etc. The machine showed a map sensor error and lambda sensor error as well- thats because the MAP sensor will bring on the lambda sensor fault- so my advise would be to get it down to a citroen place and get it tested- if it shows those faults then at least you will know.
--------
Further stuff i noticed:
What threw me off further in the direction of 'fuel' issues was that when it went wrong at idle (usually once heated up for no logical reason) was that as the idle fluctuated you could even hear the pump changing speed- this was actually because the engine speed changing gave the alternator a different voltage which was passed on to all the electrics.
Also I managed to drive for an hour and a half without the problem by keeping the revs really low (so always being in the highest gear possible) and keeping the heat down with the fan on full and hot- engine heat did seem to cause issues and maybe keeping the revs down gave less fluctuation for the Manifold Air Pressure sensor to sense!! You could fairly reliably set off my car by pushing it quite hard for about a minute then it would stutter on acceleration.

Very helpful info there mate. Rep left :y:.
Yea it could be the map sensor or the lambda. Its going to the garage this tuesday to be lowered. I will get the guy to have a look at it for me.
How much am I looking to pay for sorting it out (roughly)?
Thanks

map sensor is sadly about £75- as that causes the other error best to do that first- or if you find somebody who knows how then check to see if the lambda sensor is giving out a reading

had a similar problem mate. it ended up being my lamba sensor. cost me about £65 and it was easy enough for me to change myself. i also gave my map sensor a clean. your best getting a diagnosis before you change random parts, thats how i found it was the lamba sensor.
hope this helps

Ok cool.
Went out in it before and it didnt do anything. Seemed very smooth and nice to drive today.
How much is a diagnosis test roughly? I didnt plan this to happen and bought loads of stuff for the car :P. Cant afford for something to be seriously wrong really :fcuk:

I have this issue too, payday cant come quick enough! :D
I notice that as it drops below the revs the dash lighting starts to flicker along with the main beams too. Don't know if that is relevant? Just guess it is the electrics dieing along with the engine.

i had this problem and resolved it ....
...its the ht leads
trust me mine was ideling all over the shop was jolting through some gears and when it did it made an awful sound ! and does slow you down and can be dangerous when coming out of junctions its a common problem with saxos especially with the shite weather anyway its a simple and easy job to fix anyone whoes picked up a spanner before can change them...
anyway
ht leads you can buy at your local scrappies for roughly £20 but best get them on eBay a refurbed one for a good price !
i bought mine from citeron which were £100 but you can also buy them from euro car parts also if you do change these change the spark plugs while your their as this will also help you i garuntee 99.9% this will be the problem and if not it will be the lamda sensor or the fuel filter
heres some links if you need some ht leads ...ow yea and get a diagnostics check it will tell you if a plug is playing up and therefore you will know..
http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecommerce/Search_Results.asp

its actually called the coil pack.....

That's the next thing i was going to replace actually. So are they a standard size for all models of saxo? I have a mark1 1.4i.

mine does the same. been told by few people its most likely the fuel. may need new filter or somethin.

please all of you let us know how you get on for your various similar problems- best as said before to take it in for diagnostic test (under £50) rather than wasting money on extra things that wont fix it.

its not the ht leas your replace there just the plugs replace the whole coil pack !

Mine seems to do it every other day lol. Its gone better than it was but often does it in 3rd gear, slows you down a little then boosts you off again as you press the accelerator to get it going again.
Just got mine lowered so dont really want to fork out alot lol. Oh well....i will just see how it goes.
If anyone fixes this problem - update the thread please :y:
