Done a search but cant find this term mentioned anywhere.

Basically the gearbox makes a whirring noise through every gear and when changing down gears, pressing in the clutch, coming up to a junction it still makes this noise. It seems to speed up with revs. And at idle its more of a knocking sort of noise but the noise disappears completely when i press in the clutch.

I took it to a gearbox specialist who said its the gearbox front bearing, is there another term for this? he said they would replace the bearings and te seals.

Im fairly confident i can whip the gearbox off myself, is it easy enough to replace this particular bearing when the box is off?

thanks

oh yes- when mine did this it was due to a gearbox oil leak- really easy to get some gearbox oil- you could hear a slight gring when in any gear- but when stationary with clutch depressed it would go away- filled it up with oil- all good (but probably damaged a bit)! People suggested this bearing to me but to check the oil first- yours sounds more severe but worth a try.

Mine was whirring. It suddenly started to do it. I carried on driving it for around 2000 miles then it siezed solid and smashed me up a kirb, which was very scary! I was only doing about 30mph, but it was bad enough!

If id have been on the motorway when it happened id be dead! The front wheels locked solid with the clutch in or out, and even when in neutral the wheels would not turn!

Get it sorted mate cus you dont want it siezing on you, like mine did!

The gearbox specialist said to make sure it has oil in the box in the meantime just to prolong it until i cant sort it out, but thanks for the heads up.

is the first motion shaft the same thing as the input shaft? and is this bearing easy enough to locate and replace? or would it be better me pickin up a decent second hand box?? thanks everyone
