are rear brake shoes self adjusting?
i.e. do they move out themselves or do you have to calibrate them whilst fitted?
thanks

do you mean the piston which pushes out???

na mate, you know the shoes have to be near the drum so you get better braking
i put some shoes into my bros car today and a cylinder for it to clear MOT
not sure if theres enough braking efficiency at the rear drums as i didnt remember adjusting the shoes outwards, i was assumnig that they self adjust as you push the brake or is that bullshit?
thanks

7th March 2008, 00:44

still confused as to whether i needed to adjust the shoes before mounting the drum, it had a tooth gear on the shoe and the housing it mounts on...
help me :( lol

Nah theyre self adjusting. just pull the handbrake a few times then repeatedly pump the pedal to allow them to adjust.

though theres a manual adjuster down the bottom if braking is inadequate.

New shoes need manually adjusting when you first fit them , adjust them up as much as you can , WHILST leaving the drum free to spin . They can be little sods to adjust correctly and you may need to pull the drum off a couple of times .

done all that today, pedal feels so much better now :y:
last problem is the handbrake, there no play in the handbrake lever at all
i think the shoes need to be adjusted, i.e. pushed out by remving the drum so there just about touching the inner drum when its put back on...
there is a gear mechanism of some sort inside but not too sure how to go about it...
thanks for help

^^ you need to adjust the rear shoes so they are just very very slightly touching the drum mate. has the handbrake cable been adjusted in the past?
SAM33R
8th March 2008, 01:56
na i aint adjusted it yet mate, just been doing the work for my younger bro...

there is a manual adjuster that you just need to turn with a flat head screw driver. its hard to explain without a pic, lol
SAM33R

hmmmm
wear does the flat head screw driver go?
have i gotta remove the drums?
also can the shoes be adjusted back and forth i.e. just say first time i over do them?
help much appreciated

theres a spinny thing like a wheel that you need to turn to adjust them.
yes you have got to remove the drums
yes they can be re-adjusted.
are we talking about the handbrake or the brakes here?
SAM33R
8th March 2008, 02:09
rear shoes, the handbrake is ok ish atm but the shoes really need to be pushed out a bit more so the handbrake also catches properly
Mark51
8th March 2008, 02:21
if you dont want to take the drums off again then you can adjust the handbrake cable under the car using a 13mm spanner. id only do this if the handbrake is abit "slack"
SAM33R
8th March 2008, 02:23
handbrake is tight as fuk mate lol
im just unsure as to whether the rears will go through MOT
and whether the handbrake will do either
:(
lol
thanks
sam
just to add, when i fitted the new shoes, i didnt adjust them thinking they were self adjusting and gonna touch the drums by itself
Mark51
8th March 2008, 02:46
^^ in theory they should do but it never works which is why you need to adjust them yourself.
