Ever since owning the saxo the gearbox has always made a kind of whining noise. But now its developed a kind of rattle noise from the gearstick area.
Sounds almost like a rattling bearing of some kind. It gets worse as I accelerate, and almost dissapears when I back off.
Any ideas??

Does it go when you engage the clutch?
or is it there constantly?

Dissapears when I engage clutch, same as the whining noise.

Could be the Thrust bearing.
They are shite and go constantly.
Or the layshaft bearing on your box if its getting louder.
Sounds like it could be time for a new box.
or have yours rebuilt with new bearings and seals. and possibly syncros if you need them.

the hole gearbox had to be stripped down and re geared.

did feel a lot better aftr though, i did get it done at a motorsport garage so that prob jacked up the price

Well I know a place that will do it cheap so thats not an issue, just having the money is an issue! Also means I'm going to have to cancel my track times until its sorted :(

Same happened with me.
i knew it was there but put it off and off. then went to boot it round a clio V6 and lost all gearing 2nd. and by the time i got to mcdonalds i had 1st and 3rd left.
Ive just paid £180 to have my gearbox done. which included:
New bearings and seals
New Syncros
Internals swapped for a shorter ratio box.
He said the parts were £130 and he charged me £50 labour.

Yeah I think that is about the same price as my mate said he can get re-conned ones for.
Gona have to start saving and get it sorted i think.

input shaft bearing makes more noise when you lift off than when you accelerate, and also makes most noise in first and virtually none in 4th and 5th, when i killed the output shaft bearings it made no noise in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, only made very dodgy noises in 4th and 5th under load.
Sounds to me like the clutch release bearing, my factory one seized and ate into the clutch pressure plate.

If I can find a second hand box for a reasonable price I might just go for that for now, and keep saving for a re-con.

My gearbox was whining, but i carried on driving it for 2000 miles, and then it seized solid! Very scary!
Could have killed me if i was doing high speeds. The front wheels locked solid, then a shaft smashed through the side of the gearbox casing!:fcuk:

where do you actually hear the noise coming from?? i have a whining noise from my car but mine sounds like its coming sometimes from engine bay...sometimes from front wheels and sometimes from steering wheel? can you defo hear it coming from gearbox and is this inside the car you can hear it?
