right... from time to time cars do need bits replacing, they need servicing, they need taxing and insuring... With that Beemer welcome to the world of expensive running costs regardless of the fact it gobbles diesel.

Be careful man, especially if you're going into a shed load of debt for it. At 67k miles it'll be needing a cambelt change soon... are you going to able to afford the £700 for that? what about the tyres? are they new or do they need changing soon? I'd budget for about £500-600 for a replacement set like.

considered an audi a4/a6...they are nice cars but they are imo dad cars and a touch less suave than the likes of the 530d...

My dad had an A6... luxury. tbh. got to drive it once and my god you cant describe the feel compared to that of a saxo. even just the feedback from the steering wheel felt amazing.

awesome.

litterally havent tought of any of that stuff...will see if he will do what needs doing before i buy it...hopefuly within the price...will have to have a talk with him about all the running costs etc...he is in no hurry to sell so ive got plenty of time to decide weather i can afford it really or not.

Buying a big engined beemer, especially if there is work to be done (belt replacement etc...) is going to cost the bomb. But for what its worth, the 3.0d engine is very, very good, practically makes the 3.0 petrol invalid. Massive torque, smooth ride, plenty of power across the rev range and very good economy considering its size and weight. Plus open any car mag and you're bound to be swamped by 'this beemer handles amazingly' lines all over. RWD means good balance and its relaxing too. Good alrounder springs to mind.

Not read the whole thread, but going from a saxo to a beemer, speaking from experience, the fuel bills go up, part prices go up (60 quid for 2 wee sensors ), I was £220 for 2 new rear tyres, I could fit a set of 4 Eagle F1's to the saxo for like 180 or something like that!

But the difference in class is unbelievable, so much smoother, comfier with full leather, steering feel is great and just feels a lot more solid. I can adjust my seat up and down, and flick an extra leg rest bit out as well, just loads of wee touches make it a much nicer car to drive.

mate have a look on autotrader, you'l be amazed at how many nice beemers you can get for half what your wanting to pay.

I love beemers tbh, running costs are high tho if you want to look after it properly.

Don't get a loan for 15k, you would 100% end up regretting it.

AlexR
12th March 2008, 20:50
Wouldn't get anything bigger than a 3 series, they are big heavy cars and nothing can cover that up. Their engine's aren't overengineered like they used to be either although they are very well designed. They are very expensive to service and maintain too.

sim69er
12th March 2008, 21:04
i work for syther bmw and there a nice car altho when looking to buy one, not alot goes wrong however when it does its stupidly expensive and when you come to service it will be alot of £££

we charge £300 for one of your first service's which are really basic like oil/filter etc,

also mpg round town is shocking i used a petrol one to do a post office run and driving back i only managed 22mpg

altho plus points they are uber comfy and big pimpin which i love

it will be a semi auto box ie you put it into drive then if needs be, they have paddels on the steering wheels to change the gears with.

what about a 1 series? like a 120d?

Don't get an auto, auto boxes last a lot less time than manuals, they use more fuel and aren't as quick.

Get a 320d Msport, then at least you get awesome looks and handling, acceptable running costs, and it won't depreciate as it's desireable.

Although TBH i'm perfectly happy with my fabia, could have got a damn nice 3 series for the same money too but didn't like the size or cost of running.
