How are you handling the car situation being a uni student?
Problem Ive got is im getting a new policy in mid April, then going to Uni in Sept. My first choice Uni, Cardiff, would mean it would be impractical and very expensive to take my car. No-where to park, and theres a toll between the Uni and my house which is nearly 6 quid.
My second choice would be much more practical, Bristol UWE, but the areas fooking dodgy and I get the feeling it would be on bricks before long.
I dont want to cancel the policy and get a hefty admin charge and lose the NCB, but I dont wanna pay £1300 for a policy im hardly gonna use.
What have you lot done? Cheers :drink:

Well I'm in my 3rd year at Hudds uni and pay £53 a month on my VTR. TBH I use it all the time and makes going home easy (261 miles). If it wasn't for the fact I do live far away from home I probably wouldn't have it (and my bank balance would be far healthier:P)
Needs must though mate. I've been lucky with on street parking too *touch wood*
Suck it and see.

nothing wrong with the UWE area, why would someone steal your standard wheels anyway? i think someone is being immature benjamin... UWE is just around the corner from where i work, i think they have their own carpark!

personally i didnt go to uni so i dont really no, but most of my friends have gone away to uni and ended up selling their cars, on street parking can be ok but you still get the odd knob that sees something nice and has to wreck it....just make sure it doesnt look like a dodgy street...and locking wheel nuts lol

Yeah its up at frenchay campus mate but i still dont trust the locals tbh. Its like if you let your 14 year old daughter go out in Weston at night shes gonna end up wasted and pregnant, leave your car in Bristol its gonna end up smashed and audio-less

I never charge though I feel like a cunt lol

i sold my saxo before i came to uni as it was too likely to get stolen because of the wheels, leather and audio on display. i bought a standard golf to replace it. its now on coilovers with 18's and a good sound system. but i have kept it subtle so it doesnt stand out too much and there is no audio on display. the only problem i have had so far is that my front number plate was stolen. supprising really as its quite a dodgy area. the most burgled road in britain is only a couple of streets away and some times stolen cars get dumped round here.
i'm glad i bought it with me though as i use it quite a lot and supprisingly i dont get asked for lifts.
i dont have the problem with insurance as i paid it off in one lump.

I travel around 54.4miles to Uni every day by train, takes an hour and costs £11...
today I drove Cost me around £10 petrol to get here, and when I leave in a hour its going to cost me £2.00 for parking. :y:
Commuting is the best bet for me I only go Uni 3 days a week :A:

I work part time but im on a stupidly high wage so my 16 hours work earns me more then a few of my mates full time jobs.
All of my uni mates drive though and work between like 8-16 hours a week + some of them get bursarys the jammy gits.
Worst comes to worst just max out your student loans, spend what you need on a car and bang the rest in an ISA account. Free money!

im in the same situation, going in sept, renewal in june. i think im gonna just insure it tpft and leave it at home while im in halls, and when i come back i still gotta car to drive, and i wont need fully comp because ill be doing like 3 k driving a year, so i would be willing to risk paying for tpft and getting an easy ncb.
second year ill probably take it, but then its a different story i suppose. soton uni give you a barn basically with loadsa parking spaces, that would be sweet because its probably safer there than parking at home, but most uni campus's are shite for parking, specially ones in city centre's like notts.

I'm planning to go to UWE and will have to drive there from yate. I've had exactly the same thoughts, although UWE is nearer filton and isn't too dodgy tbh.
But in your case it depends what you will do, are you planning to use the accomodation or just drive in daily? Cause i will be driving in daily but not leaving the car for lengthy times plus my mate lives in the student acc so i can park round his. :y:

is that for parking at the actual uni, or for parking at your accommodation shoorn?

to be honest ben you dont really need a car when you're at uni.
I live 270miles from Sayer Towers and in my first and second year I got by without a car - i didnt even think to myself that i really needed one for anything. You'll find that just about everything you need is on campus or within walking distance anyway.
On top of that you'll have people who will use you for lifts, the odd trip here and there, doesnt seem a lot but it soon adds up. Also you'll find you'll drive even for the rediculous short distances where walking would have been fine.
Its expensive to maintain and pointless in my opinion - the fact my dad pays for just about everything on the car except insurance, tax and fuel helps though.

Cool to see Cardiff as your first choice. I've got mates at both Bristol and Cardiff unis and most of them take their cars with them no probs. The UWE area aint too bad really mate.
I go to uni but i live at home and drive in 3 days a week :y:

ben frenchay really in not that bad a part of bristol. plus the uni there has loads of car parks loads of cctv and there are security guards walking around them. your car could be damaged whereever you park tbh.

sold my car, cancelled insurance took a rebate
spent it all on a good time
good time is worth more than a car at uni, plus some mates have em so its not to bad, i dont mind walking to uni or getting the train to work, everyone else does..
got my regestration to sell so i will be sorted for a run about over summer when i go home, my advice, keep 700 stashed away in savings for a car next summer
enjoy this summer with your mates, sell the car stash 700 use the rest on a good time at uni

my campus has electric gates and cameras eveywhere, so do most student halls.. but be prepared for the usual ariel steeling and wipers standing up lol
also costs more to park on campues £200 a year and people do get used for a lift tbh..

i run my car and get train into town(15mins), so i have best of both worlds
what i could be wasting on accomadation is spent on running my pimpmobile and staying at home means ALOT less debt..

Well ill add something...
I have my civic and im in my first year at uni. To be honest I dont really need the car (only to get to work at 6am). It is really expensive etc etc. The reason i do have it though is coz I love my car! I would get by without it but i love it too much. I just park nearby uni for free and walk the remaining distance, like only 10mins away. The reason though why i might be able to afford a car...just is because i live at home. Next year i might be moving out and would need a permit but i can afford it just...

Im in the same situation as a few of you folk. Hopefully going to Uni of Birmingham in September, grades permitting.
I dont think I will take the VTR, rather keep it on the drive and try to pay insurance - similar situation to you Hopcraft. Im definitely not selling it! I need one of those 'sell my saxo!? Id rather eat barbecued horse manure'!
Good thread and nice to see a few of you in a similar position to me.
NB/ UWE is going to be my insurance, so I may see a couple of you soon!

I live at home and travel about 50 miles return 2 or 3 days a week to get in. I work which pays for the car, i couldnt go without it, plus im a snob and wont use public transport.
All depends whether you can afford it at the end of the day.

I'm a uni student still living at home like a real bum, hence having the cunning ability to keep running my car! Actually works out slightly cheaper than going by train for me lol. Would have made sense to move out and not have the car, but being a hopeless petrol-head I just wanted my wheels, so I've gone down that route. Do whats best for you financially mate. :)

Cheers for the input guys. Im in the same situation as a few of you, some of ya are gonna sell your cars that isnt even an option for me I love it too much as gay as that sounds.
Ill def be living away, I dont think you can experience the full uni lifestyle if your still at home but thats personal preference. Ill be paying for the insurance next month up front, come sept ill have to decide whether to suspend or possibly cancel it. Ill just have to see how practical it will be I spose
I plan on coming out with shed loads of debt because I know I can handle it, not being arrogant but im very controlled with my finances so Im just gonna have an immense time and worry about it later when I have to grow up and wear a suit
