Hello wondering if any body can help. I was driving out thursday night wen i realised my car suddenly started overheating. The temperature guage shooted into the red area and the light came on. Since this happened ive topped up with water and put in a new thermostat. No change, still overheating. Would would you recomend next cos i have no gunk under my oil cap or white smoke from the exhaust so not sure if its the head gasket either. Can anybody Help? REP GIVEN Thanks Tommo

Try changing the rad cap.
Then check the temperature of the top hose compared with the bottom hose when the engine's running. One should be considerably cooler than the other.
If they're both the same, or one stays stone cold, you've either got a blockage or the water pump is worn out.
If all that seems OK, get a compression test/head gasket test done.

Would u say go for a new rad cap?? And any ideas on how expensive the pressure/head gasket checks are. Thanks again Tommo

Check the rads not gone crispy , look for white/ blue stains on it , check bottom hose isnt leaking , dampness inside either of the front footwells (indicating possible heater matrix leaking):panic:

Did you have water in when it got hot? or was it empty?
if it was empty and you filled it up, did you bleed the system? you could have a airlock.
My water pump went on thursday and it was making one hell of a racket so that could be a sign if its gone.

u have probs got an air lock or blocked rad, get it a bit hot the open the bleed nipple on top left of the engine bay. wait until it starts to poor out a bit then close it up again. Then check coolant level then repate a few times.
ALSO WHEN YOU PUT THE THEMO STATE IN DID U MAKE SURE THE JIGGLY PIN ON IT WAS TO THE TOP?

Yea i am as you could have a airlock. which i what i thought i had and Wolze said to do. although it turned up to be my waterpump.
I don't think its hard.
just get the car warm and undo a bleed valve somewhere until it starts to come out and then refill it with antifreeze and water...
im not 100% though.

Agree with the previous comment. Sounds very much like an air lock.
