See for me todays cars (Golfs, Focus's, Leons, Meganes) etc aren't really the true representation of a 'Hot hatch'

They're too bloody big and lardy for a start, so they might have more power than say a Mk1 Golf GTi but in terms of the whole driving experience they're never going to come close.

Something small, light and with a nice revvy engine...surely thats the true definition of a Hot hatch.

I mean a Lotus Carlton's a feckin saloon...amazing car even by todays standards but not a 'Hot hatch!!

Point to point car with plenty of driver involvment, give me a...

1/ Pug 205 GTI 1.9 (the definative drivers hot hatch IMO)
2/ Renault 5 GT Turbo (having one with 200bhp did it for me!!)
3/ Saxo VTR/ VTS
4/ Pug 106 GTI
5/ Mk1 VW Golf Gti 1.8

Having owned my GT Turbo for 4 years and spent countless days giving it large on some of Englands finest I can honestly say that our Saxo is most definately a modern day equivelent.

The way it handles is out of this world, I just find it lacks a bit of power (well 100bhp to be precise!!) but to be fair it makes it more fun, just keeping the NA engine screaming at the limit.

Thats my take on things anyway......

Are we talking top perfoamnce cars or actual hot hatches? as some of those are not hot hatches at all, just big fast saloons.

Going on the term hot hatch meaning 'a pumped up version of a normal road car for the driver who wants something extra"

I think my top five proper hot hatch, as defined would be;

1) Golf Gti Mk1 - The first 'real' hot hatch.
2) Pug 205 Gti 1.6 (saw what VW did but made it even better. 1.9 is too front heavy and not as balanced as the 1.6)
3) Astra Gte 16v Mk2. Took it to whole new level. 150bhp in a family hatchback. Mad for 1990 and a twocers dream.
4) Seirra Cosworth 3 door. The first cosworth for a long time and gave the company an ikonic reputation amongst the streets of urban england.
5) AxGT - (not the gti) - Had a better power to weight ratio than a ferrari F40. 7.5 seconds to 60 in a cardboard box made you feel untouchable.

Coonper
23rd March 2008, 22:14
Come on! The 205 gti has to be at the top!

If you asked someone in the street what a hot hatch was, they would definitely say a 205 gti! No doubt about it!:P

thats what the hot hatches are there are some exceptions (the new twigo and clio sport) a C2 vtr/s drives by and you dont even notice so,

Imo focus rs/st older versions Escort s1/2 turbo,
fiesta st older version rs turbo ,
corsa/astra vxr olerd version nova/astra gsi/gte etc etc
twingo sport 165, golf gti/r32, are all big bros/sis of the cars from the past the origanal "hot hatches" take the golf its 2x bigger weighs heavier instead bigger engine etc etc

the cars ive just mentioned are the hot hatches of this decade !!!

scottyvtr

Are Sierra and Escorts are hatchbacks ?????? can agree with the BM i was eating my dinner when i done the list lol !

I suppose all cars are bigger now, and there are no REAL hot hatches. As you say, there are modern hatch backs which are quick, but they are not reallly "hot hatches" as such.

I suppose modern ones are MG ZR, Golf GTI, corsa VXR, mazda 3 etc...

Crap imo...

Cars of today 'warm hatches' cars of yesterday 'hot hatches'.

though can see how things have improved 1.4's put out on average 100bhp (but weigh more) whereas 1.4's you would be lucky with 70-75.

just an example.

Agreed but its sad how quickly people forget the cars of late 80's early 90's that were around in the boom of hot hatches. Maybe its because thats when i started driving that i look at them so fondly, who knows.

But in repsonse to the lastter part of that quote, dont you remember the 106 rallye? basically a bare knuckle version of the 106, not much sound deading, steel wheels etc etc and revs to 8K pushing out around 100bhp from a 1.4.

Then theres the 205 rallye, which came with twin webbers as standard.

The Nova sr, the same boy racer rep as the saxo but equally a very capable little car for a 1.3/1.4

The Ax GT, more power to weight than an F40, again a 1.4.

In actual fact, weve gone backwards in terms of performance abilty.

knew somene would bring that up :d i agree even a metro turbo was pushing 100hp but with obviously a good power to weight.

Hatches of today have gone for more... lets put 5 airbags, satnav, cruise control, climate control.
When im a bit more financially stable and hit 25 id like to get myself a polo g40 or gt some cars should not be forgotten :D and well have so much potencial still.

in all honesty toyota glanza/starlet gt should be in this group... its a hatch of the 90's and pritty much owns most of the cars as standard. just has an aquired taste looks wise. I personally would have loved one... would be driving one now... but i was a fanny and decided to look elsewhere as i got 7 grand instead of 4.

A hot hatch is a tuned front drive hatch.

Cossies, Grales, Evos, M3 etc are not hot hatches by any stretch

Megane R26
Clio 182
Clio Williams
306 GTI-6/Rallye
205 GTI

would be my list. Probably in that order.

106 Rallye S1 would be hard to ignore too

(p.s. I have actually driven the above, to say the R26 is a poor steer is to chat bollocks)

They are medium sized now due to the safety element imo. Although, they could easily bring out a decent twingo or something.
