Hey guys,
im new here so please excuse me if this is in the wrong section. :)
Im 17 and currently learning to drive, i have been looking at cars and i like the look of the mark 2 saxo.
Now as im so young i know i wont be able to get a vtr, or vts, how ever i dont want to get a car that is very slow. For example my friend has a 1 litre polo and its so slow at accelerating.
My question is, how fast/slow is the 1.1 or 1.0 saxo.
Cheers

You'd be suprised how quick the 1.1's actually are. Its due to the weight of them, but the are fairly nippy. Out of the 1.1 and the 1.0 id deffo go for the 1.1, which is mpi, as opposed to the 1.0 which still runs a carb!
Could your budget not stretch to a furio??

just as slow mate, get the 1.4 check ur insurance shud find there isnt much difference, wasnt for me back in the day anyways. i had a lil face off in my younger days with a rover metro and lost in a 1.1

As said the 1.1 is a good little car, don't go getting a high litre engine car just yet, save up the NCB and wait a couple of years for a VTS and such like.
David

The 1.1 will faster than the polo, due to weight.
AlexB
27th March 2008, 08:21
yea saxos are pretty nippy due to them weighing less than other cars
not sure about how the 1.1 goes as ive never driven 1
but they will be quicker than say the polo of a fiesta ect
there a nice little car
and a good point is parts are quite easy to source if you bump it

Ka's are a suprisingly quick car off the mark. When in my VTR against a ka i overtake it, but there isnt really much in it tbh. Until i hit about 60-70 then its just gone!
AlexB
27th March 2008, 08:38
yea the ka is a nippy motor
look a bit pap tho
the sport is ok with the better bumpers and alloys
id go for something slightly bigger
just for practicality

Nah no point getting anything too fast for your first car i think its best if you work your way up as you get older due to insurance costs and i found my 1.1 saxo to be quiet a nippy little car :)

not when all my mates had VTR's and S2 rallye's, i wasnt gonna be left behind ;)

yea i wouldnt advise a vtr/s as a first car
ive got a vts as mine with my mods declaired
and £4k is an insane amount for insureance
but i had the money to do it
also theres quite a big brown factor to it as a first car

sorry but how is a 1.1 saxo nippy? it may feel nippy to you driving it as you dont feel like your lugging about any weight, but as soon as you check the 0-60 stats it BLATENTLY... isnt nippy, i would call a vtr nippish, i would say a 1.1 saxo is slow! aint made for speed, and generally worse mpg than a vtr as most people driving a 1.1 tend to hammer it more to try get it moving quicker,

yeah but whats the point of having a fast motor as your first car you cant speed nowadays anyway so id rather have a slow car then points on my pink card

snap....(it is a good lil car as its cheap to run) but i was just stating as people on here seem to say blabla 1.1 saxo is actually quite nippy, when its far from it lol. (obviously saxo biased)

Probs been said above but have you thought about a westcoast or furio?

27th March 2008, 10:27
Get a Furio..Its basically a 1.4 VTR/VTS..
Look the same etc, just aren't quite as quick as the VTR but are plenty pokey enough..

My 1st car is a VTR, with lots of mods. Insurance was just over 2K!
But it was worth it! Great fun!! Not that quick though!

27th March 2008, 11:08
to be fair mate if you are going for the 1.0/1.1 for the extra little cash u can get a furio/westcoast as they are only 1 insurance group higher than the 1.0/1.1
Quick

All saxo's have fuel injection even the 1.0s- only way they would pass the emissions sections of the MOT!
Earlier 1.1s are single point injection not multi!

have you tried a quote on a vtr was cheaper for me to get a vtr insured then a 1.1 :homme:
that was when i had just turned 18. Take a look in the insurance section, best way to do it is your own policy i added mammy and daddy as named drivers and saved over 1k came to 1.4k fully comp at 18 with 0ncb :homme: for a 1.2 sxi corsa they wanted 1.7k 1.1 saxo was 1.6k wtf

1.1s are nippy tbh, compared to the other 1.1 cars out there.
arnt saxo 1.1 engines the fastest 1.1 made or something?

Buy a westy / Furio,
low insurance group and all the nice looks ;)
Mrk1
27th March 2008, 14:09
Yeah i'll agree I've bought a Westie and tbh its got the VT kit moves pretty quickly and wont rape you on insurance. So a great subsitute for a 1.1 or VTR as its set nicely in between as far as stats go.

How much you have to spend on insurance?
My vtr was 1600 for the year, paid monthly it came to £135 a month at 17 with 0NCB 2nd year is under £900 and about £70 a month. with quinn direct.

depends on where ya live i spose. a 1.1 for in the city will do you great, gets to speed pretty well..
but if its motorways and stuff u intend on doing then i wud try for a westy or something...

I could spend about 1700 max if i needed to. I would love a VTR, how ever that insurance sounds extremely low to me, especially on your own policy.

nah only if the car is registerd in your name and insured with mum/dad as policy holder. if its registerd to mum/dad and mum/dad is policy holder then as far as they r concernd ur just taking it out for a drive.

iv had just under the clock (110) but ran out of road, was doing 5500 rpm. went to skeg-vegas with my m8 and just sat in the fast lane at 85 on the m-way.

The 1.0 and 1.1 are the same engine essentially, both use single point injection, neither use a carb, 2001 and newer models use mpi. There is only 5bhp difference, however yes the 1.1 is considerably better.

1.1 is nippy at town speeds and will do you fine if you do a lot of town driving but a westie/furio is definately worth the extra cash if you will be on the motorway alot.

1.1 saxos are proper mint first cars, furios, 106 quicksilvers, stuff like thaare also mint first cars
quicksilver in my opinion :P
Jazz
27th March 2008, 22:33
The pre 2001 Polo's have a 1.4 8v or 1.4 16v. The 16v has around 100bhp, so anything less then a VTR, forget it. However the 1.4 8v Polo (60bhp) is SLOW as a milk-float, my mate has one and I was amazed at how sluggish it was- my first car at 17 (Ka 1.3) could mince it. A 1.1 Saxo will do nicely against a 1.4 8v Polo as they're heavy things.
