Just been around the office for the annual Grand National Sweep.

Anyone else ever back a horse on the national and if so which one are you going for this year?

Your obviously going to win then.
Get someone to help you study the horses form.
Or put a quid on an outsider and then maybe an each way bet on a decent horse.

Get someone to help you study the horses form.
Form doesnt really count for much in this race, its more of a lottery! Although I do agree that decent horses stand a much better chance than a 100-1 outsider.
hedgehunter is a mint horse
It is indeed, feel a wee fiver each way on that maybe.

Yeah your right tbh, lottery.
I think im gonna have 50 quid each way on hedgehunter.
And im thinking a pretty big stake on kelami, unless i get told something between now and the race i dont know.

4th April 2008, 13:24
Havent thought about it really, Gonna have a good read of the paper this evening/tomorrow morning.
You can bet your bottom dollar that a horse with over 50/1 odds will finish in the top three though.

Im not really a betting man, 50quid each way is out of my league lol. Hedgehunters at 20/1 on ladbrokes just now. Kelami is 40/1, so both are worth a punt. Cloudy Lane is 9/2 and Comply or Die is 10/1. Cloudy Lane is favourite.

I have been told some good things about Kelami.
Might put it on each way but got a good feeling about it.

Form has declined worryingly over the course of the season, and nothing indicates he will stay the trip.

Form wise for national is a out of the window jobby,..
Tbh hedgehunter wont win, the other horses are way out of his league now.. Just go by names on the national, best way to win

22 2-P014 D'ARGENT 11 10-12
Robert Thornton Alan King
An out-and-out stayer who goes well in long-distance slogs but has seen his overall record marred by some erratic jumping. Unlikely to be improving that discipline at the age of 11.
Rating: 6/10 Odds: 25-1
awesome, erratic jumping? ive got a fucking deer

McKelvey died mate. Had to be put down which is so sad. Don't agree with the Grand National if I'm honest as they get hurt too much but yea....its a prestige race and I still bet on it :P.
I won £30 on Comply or Die and anther £20 on King Johns Castle.

mckelvey, did he really die?
Yea...had to be put down. Says he fell at the 20th, was unseated then ran into a barrier and couldn't get back up. Was killed there and then :n:. Must be so hard to love a horse like that and next minute its gone after you entered it into a race. I mean I know there bred for that but the trainer etc must get highly attached to them. R.I.P McKelvey

5th April 2008, 23:42

i bet his trainer/owner is sick

look at us
we go on abroad on holiday for like 2 weeks and we miss our cars
with the car all we have to do is maintain it, wash it, drive it
with a horse your spending hours a day with it teaching it how to jump, cope with different grounds etc etc
in a car we just turn her on, foot down and go

Lol....good way of putting it tbh. The owner said "Any death is very regrettable and we can't defend them, but as an animal welfare organisation our duty is to work with the organisers to improve things," said RSPCA equine consultant David Muir.
"If you look at the National in the last eight years and compare it to the eight years before there has been a massive reduction in fatalities and injuries."
I remember I watched it as a kid and loads of horses had to be killed. Was really bad.
They also said that they were not sure if McKelvey was good enough to run but thought it would be ok. They gambled the risk and now its dead. Could happen to any horse though, must be truely gutting.

It died doing what it liked best I suppose
the horses team just had to crack on, its one of them things, nobody was to know this was going to happen
