Hello,

As some of you are aware i was going to buy dannys TT 2 month ago. But due to changing jobs that wasnt possible. I'm now back in the situtation of where i can change it now. Ideally it will be in May as thats when my insurance is up.

I have around 8-10k to spend,
I'm 21
I have 2 years NCB

I need some ideas of what to get. For that money i could get a TT or an S3 but its going to be an old one. I kinda want a newish car 06-07.

I was set on something abit classy and stylish like an A4, S3, TT, BMW but to get a car like that its an old model, along with high service costs.

Been thinking of an Fiesta ST as they are in my budget, come with like 5-10k on the clock, all the extras the saxo doesnt have and is a newish car 56 plate.

Ive done some insurance quotes for different cars....

Saxo - £500
Fiesta ST - £600
Golf 25th An - £1100
Golf R32 - £1400
CTR - £1100
Focus RS - £1000
Audi A4 - £900
Audi TT - £1500
Audi S3 - £1350

Give me some ideas and input on buying a newish car etc.

Thanks

I wouldnt say the ST was in the same class ass the others mentioned in terms of how classy it is, its just a modern day Saxo VTS its not suave. Its also underpowered and common. Id personally go for an Audi option

David
8th April 2008, 08:26
Not sure what the Skoda VRS' go for, but they look quite nice...

Vinny_VSX
8th April 2008, 08:26
You might not be interested mate. But I got a brand new C2 VTS with a few bells and whistles for 9k. Yes that is nearly 2.5k off the list price ;)

Dont like the VRS, so thats a no go at all.

Im would be buying an old classy car though thats my only problem. Guy at work drives a T reg Audi A4. he still tells people 'got an A4' - But its a shitbox. I dont want to be that person

R32 is out of my budget but i can i actually want to sleep with.

Car is used to go to and from work everyday. I never use it on an evening or weekend. Well i dont my saxo. Maybe thats because i hate it and dont have the bottle to drive it anywhere in case it breaks lol.

Will get a quote on 225 now..

Seat Ibiza fr tdi? Cupra looks etc. and lovely cars. Will get good performance and good MPG. Insurance should be decent and they do look quite funky.

You may be able to get a mk5 golf gt tdi as well. A guy at work has one and it's pretty nice.

Would you consider a celica?

saxodan
8th April 2008, 09:25

Karl
8th April 2008, 09:34
Can pick up a tidy 172 Leck all day long for less than 5k......
I paid 5,3k in the end for a 30,000 mile 172 Cup. :)

Keep your eye out, keep seeing cheap 182 Cups floating about.

The price difference on the insurance for the 172 and 182 is £2. Seriously lol.

I do like them and becasue they are so much in my budget by like 4k i can get the insurance too.

Could be a time to go test drive a few.

Hanuman
8th April 2008, 09:36
stay away from the megane, its awfull if it wasnt fast it WOULDNT be acceptable, if it was a 1.4 with the bodykit of the sport would you still think it looks good? if so your a hmo, the interior is terrible look at all that cheap looking grey plastic its like an old ford ka.

much rather get a leon cupra r surely the last of the other model were 05?

dont get an older audi as itl be 7year old by the time you get it then by the time your paying off your loan (if you get one) itl be even older

Japman
8th April 2008, 09:40
megane is fast, ive been in one

Karl
8th April 2008, 09:40
Leck ~ my insurance was dearer for a 172 cup as its the most "dangerous" out of the lot of them.
most bhp per tonne, no abs, no traction control.
worked out about 80 quid more than a standard 182 (did declare my exhaustage though.)

Clouds_mate
8th April 2008, 09:40
Im looking at clios and they seem to be like 5-6k for a 182. is that right or am i looking at write offs?

Karl
8th April 2008, 09:41
182's normally go for 6,5k+ if you look at good condition FSH with decent mileage for their age.

Karl
8th April 2008, 09:42
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/450585.htm
if thats not a Cat D / C, thats a fecking bargain!

Edit: Also filthy cheap http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/449839.htm

leeroybrown
8th April 2008, 09:44
6.5k is normally for a higher mileage one... can get a cup for 7k but if you want all the toys then it will 7.5kish for a decent coloured 182

2005 55 Reg SAAB 9-3 1.9TiD Vector
search them 6-8k for FULL Leather interior and the higher class ones look sporty and classy i rekon ? good mpg and reliability? just an outsider as you said you wanted class not outright speed like hte 172 or megane?

Karl
8th April 2008, 09:48
I have no idea,
im sure induction kits make no difference to whatever car really.
and my car came with an exhaust.
my 172 Cup feels smoother through the revs than the 182 i drove which was completely standard,

You know the kick at 2,5 and 5 (VVT or whatever it is)
this apparently gets smoothed out if you have an exhaust, filter?

172/182 are quite classy little cars,
Mine doesnt look as awful as my stripped out Saxo in the carpark next to Beemers and Audis :P

Clouds_mate
8th April 2008, 09:49
well insurance is up in May. I might work flat out at work doing over time till June 19th. Thats the day my overtime forms go in and the day i go on holiday. So will be relaxing after working 2 full months with long days. Go on holiday and come back and buy the car.

Or just buy it next month.

Might go down to the garage today or Thursday and try get a test drive sorted.

Which you recken? 172 or 182?

Karl
8th April 2008, 09:50
I think if you want the full toys and leather etc (more class, more you.) Id look for a cheap FF 182 with both cup packs.

......if you want to save some money, lack a little comfort but still go just as quick ;) ;)
172 Cup.

Japman
8th April 2008, 09:51
182 if your going to get one

Cal
8th April 2008, 09:52
Join the Clio club Leckeh, all the cool kids are doing it. Apart from Lee he's just a pretender

172 Cup ftw mate and get a really decent system and filter, coilovers etc with the spare £$£$£. You'll be happy with it I promise.

Soullie makes a good point about the luxury too; 182 FF with Cup packs in Liquid yellow would be just about perfect.

I totally disagree..... induction kit made mine wild.. honestly so much different.

VVT kicks in at 1.5 techincally and when it gets to 5k it went mental and Callum will confirm that

182 all the way

nothing...nothing.....*5k*spin of zee wheels.....

Cal
8th April 2008, 09:54
The kick is still very much alive... Didn't drive it standard so wouldn't know.

Robb
8th April 2008, 09:54
do they only do them cups in 'wacky' colours, or can you get black ones?

Karl
8th April 2008, 09:55
182 Cup for the win

Alot of people on ClioSport debate the 182 cup as a waste of time...
only 20kg lighter than a regular 182.

What you want is a poor mans 172 Cup ;) 80kg saved.

172 Cups are blue or silver Robb,
182 Cups are racing blue or orange.

You can get a black 182 Full fat (ie leather etc) but with cup packs (sus, spoiler, splitter, anthracite wheels)

Japman
8th April 2008, 09:55

8th April 2008, 10:02
182 FF with both packs.

How much?

Looking at around 7,5k upwards for what would be a minter...I should imagine.

Where as if you went for a slightly older (51 - 03 plate) 172 FF, youd be looking at a decent one for 5k.
Alot of money for what potentially is the same car minus a better mani / backbox.

I hate the 182 wheels also,
Cals seen the light and bought some turini's

leeroybrown
8th April 2008, 10:03

different offset boss.
172 Cup has a wider wheelbase. ;)

...so yeah, yours for 700?

Cal
8th April 2008, 10:09
If it is a 182 you get you will have to get Trophy wheels as the offset and width are different to the 172 Cup ones. Also if you want the Renault centre cap like me you cannot just buy aftermarket Speedline ones as the centre cap fitment is different. So its basically Trophy wheels or nothing mate

Karl
8th April 2008, 10:10
Buy a 172 Cup.
Will go just as well as Cals.
Has the wheels you want.
and WILL save you dollar?!

Karl
8th April 2008, 10:14
Haveto use 97 RON or above.
VPower ftw.

On a motorway @ 70mph, i return 42mpg.
My Weekly average (bearing in mind, im stuck in traffic on way to work alot. and the times I take it out I hammer it...) 32mpg.

Its better than my VTS on fuel, tax will be cheaper in the future too ( than a VTS )
Can stick about 46 quids worth of VPower in at 1.15 a litre.

Dont know if you have decided on a car yet matey but for that price range
and your needs Id really really look into a EP3 Type R.

Yea yea theres all these threads about "my cammed VTS thats stripped to
the barest minimum which isnt a nice daily driver will keep up with a standard
Civic Type R thats better built and has rear seats and comfy interior blah blah"

But tbh what would a cammed type R be like? Yea will sh1t all over a VTS.

There great cars which you know, strong engine, not too shabby interior, very
good suspension, tidy exterior. And very rapid (VTEC exists and you all know it lol)

YOu cant really beat a jap car, Germans are too fat!

Dont know if you have ruled out a Type R mate but really would consider it. Its more
grown up than Clio, saxos and that too. Yes there common, but so is an E46 M3. But
they are still fantastic cars right.

Rant over..

Karl
8th April 2008, 10:20
CTR are nice cars, Rush, agreed. but they arent the be all and end all because they have VTEC.
My Clio is quicker in all honesty :)
Craig paid £5,300 for a 30,000 mile Cambelt done (£900 at local renault stealers :O)
Clio 172 Cup on a 52 plate with 8 month tax and 9 month MOT.

Cal
8th April 2008, 10:21

half the cost to insure than the 197, faster than your saxo, comfy as fook and you can get one with 3k on the clock within your price range

Cant fault a 2.0 16V Clio. Never been in one but I know there quick.

I didnt actually say the EP3 was faster, me personally I feel its the better all round
car especially on the image factor.

Id personally love a Trophy (really really badly). Could of had one if I didnt get
the damn GTi. BUT, end of the day its still a young lads hot hatch.

Type R seem and looks more grown up, practical, but still quick on todays roads.

Im agreeing, the CTR is a better car.
Here theres just as much / if not more young boys decking it about in CTR's than Clio Sports.

But kick myself everytime that clio pisses on my bonfire.

As gay Tiff says its nimble nimble nimble

Im also a victim of getting out of a saxo in shirt and tie next to some very nice cars. I feel like aboy.

if thats the case you will feel the same in any small hatchback sporty or not, in a couple of years time it will have the same stigma

better of paying a bit more on fuel and having something like the TT or a nice BMW

sometihng more "grown up" and respectible

How can I say the ST would be gutless?? 148bhp in a car thar weighs gross 1590 kg?? Not 100% certain on that weight but thats what crops up on searches. To put it in perspective a 182 Cup weighs 1070kg and a 172 Cup even less than that with more bhp to start.

I understand about the image thing, but I don't give a toss really as I love driving it too much.

why would it?

rushy you cant comment on build qualty as you drive a 106 that would crumble like a can on impact :P

I got a ZS too technically mate, the missus car. Drive it all the time now.
106 interior build quality is miles ahead of the ZS! And the ZS is the newer
shape car.

Seats are stupidly uncomfortable. Plastic trim has fallen off in places. Steering
wheel color rubs off, seat trim is cack, dials look like there from the ELC, carpet
is beginning to rip.

The body panels may be heaver than a 106 if thats what you mean but build
"quality" is nowhere near!

Compare it to the new Mk5 Golf and Im sure the Golf is the lard arse..

IMO the Civic was one of the last cars to concern itself in keeping weight nice while having
a rapid engine.

Its only Renault now that concentrate on that with there Cup models.

Hence why the newer fiesta have come on leaps and bounds from previous years

The newer fiestas may be slightly better but Ive been in an ST and was NOT
impressed by perforance. Seats were loads better but still the plastics are very
cheap and tacky.

If I can honestly say my standard GTi interior was better which was a design
created in the 2000ish era then thats a real shame tbh.

ST may be an okay car to look at, but there is so much better out there for
the money. My personal opinion but Im sure lots of people agree.

People say oh there better than Saxos, but thats cause you owned a shit example
of a Saxo! Saxo isnt the best built car, but its a great drivers car. Not a good
all rounder at all. ST is a better all rounder but plain Jane on big wheels and
striped up like a Zebra.

Im not saying the EP3 is the be all and end all matey. Im sure the Clios are a better car

If you benchmark only performance then thats half the story.

rushy_23

I know all the ST owners are going to find where I live now and stab me.

But my 106 is the same as a Saxo. And comparing the ST back to back with the 106.
I felt it was far superior (this was when it was pretty much stock interior wise too)

Even the owner of the ST was pretty blown away! Which imo says it all. The 106 isnt
in the same league as some of these cars mentioned previous. So ST imo just got
bitch slapped.

Great modern all rounder, but it should be much more.

Dash may look shit but its works Mr Graeme.

Its the quality I on about mate, quality and build is better on the Pug. May look
better on the Fiesta but its not any better.

And remember the GTi was released in 96 so that was a design over 10 years ago!

people who slate the fiesta st as slow do my nut in,,, they didnt make it fast for the simple reason they wanted it to appeal to more people (the general public) and not limit it only to performance minded people as then they would have to compete against alot of other models. people who say its slow for a 2ltr as anyone drove the golf gtis they aint fast and one has a turbo so thats even MORE dissapointing (98-04 shape?)

its the equivelant of polos and lupo gtis they aint been designed to compete against the older brothers of performance the (newer) golf gtis and r32s..

Clio Cup is an awesome little car- a good mate in London has one and it's full of character. I almost, almost brought one before I decided on my Honda. However, a question of image arises. Basically, its just a more modern, fancy Saxo VTS, which isn't a bad thing as I used to have a VTS and swear by them. But it's still a bit of a 'boy's' car if you get what I mean. I don't doubt their ability for a second, in fact on tight inner-city routes I'd go as far as to say they might even have an edge on my Accord as they are still so small and nimble. But then an EP3 Civic Type-R has a slightly more grown up image, pretty much identical performance (on fifth gear it did beat the Clio 172 Cup round the track) and better build quality. One of the things that put me off the Clio was that owners kept on complaining of failed coil-packs and electrical problems.

But aside from the inevitable high insurance, for bangs-per-buck the Clios are fabulous. :)

EDIT- and people saying ST's are slow need to take a reality check. Just because its not as nippy as some of your cars doesn't mean that its slow. A small hatch doing 0-60 in 7.9s is perfrctly respectable. Its just that the Clio came out before and is noticably quicker, many people thought Ford should have sold the Fiesta with at least 180+bhp to be in the same ballpark, especially since the older clio set the benchmark.

Problem is people who buy them go on like there stupidly fast. Well the typical
Hero type people! (not you Grayham!)

Again, I never said they were stupidly quick, but the owner who sat in mine who
though his was amazingly quick was taken back. I new what to expect when I
sat in his car (but tbh still I was like wtf). But he thought he knew what mine
would be like in comparison.

Very true about image, good point, and yes the Clio is a fantastic looking car. Depends on what he is after in a car... he said the suit-and tie thing with the saxo was an issue. Would it also be in a Clio? Obviously the Clio has a better image than Saxo, but still something to consider. CTR is group 17 iirc.

You're right mate. Group 17. Dunno where I got that from

Easy mistake- Problem is that CTR's are very expensive to insure, even for a group 17. Again image might play a part here. When I got quotes, I actually found my Accord to be cheaper than a Clio Cup (by about 100) and also a CTR (by about 250 lol?!). Which is odd since the Accord is both more powerful and quicker than a CTR.

Hanuman

i think thats because they see most young lads in slower cars (theyv probably owned years ago) and seeing them thinking its the bees knees so they just like to show off and go vrooooom see you later you wish you had this power..

i was on the motorway doing a good speed and a crappy clapped up 106 (chavved up and even had the pointed chav cap on ) wouldnt move over at all and was holding traffic up tailing well behind me as he was slowing down then coulnt keep up, yet he literally weaved in and out of the lanes thinking he was on a rally, soon as he moved over it was by by to him, he seemed to think his car was fast and putn people at danger the way he was weaving in and out

The ST is a good all rounder, and IMO should be more powerfull.
Ford made it 150BHP to get it in insurance group 13.
Also 1590KG is the gross vehicle weight, an ST's kerb weight is 1137KG.

Ford have also just released power upgrades for the ST's that can be retrofitted, and give it 165 iirc or 185BHP.
A decent exhaust and filter will see 170-175bhp and remap could see 180bhp, as the standard exhaust and filter or very restrictive.

A Focus ST is quicker into three figuers, agreed. Evo magazine timed the Accord 0-60 in 6.1, a ATR owners club member got his standard one to 60 in 5.8 with some crazy 6k launch and slipping the clutch. Top end the 2.5 Duratec Turbo in the Focus is understandably a bit quicker. Not much in it mind...

yea i was just saying though tbh for the size of it i expected it to be slow off the mark but a 50+mph monster but its the oposite i was really dissapointed with its performance when driving 50+mph its so flat unless you drop it a gear when your cruising yet i was veryyyyy impressed with the 0-60

Thanks

Great. The 325i is possibley better value and the 330d is very fast too.

330i generally come spec'd up to the tits with Harmon Kardon stereos etc. Reliable too

You can and it is.

You are correct, I do like my BMWs, they all drive really well, which puts them ahead of Audi and Mercedes in my book

Leckie is young, doesn't do many miles and the derv is a bit more +fuel system bills can be nasty.

The petrol is very, very solid and hence the one I'd choose

Quote was for the Petrol one lads.

Just looking at the garages site im going tonight. Prices seem very high for the cars, I wouldnt mind chopping mine so i didnt have the hassle of selling.

Isit it easy to get a good deal at a garage?

tell you what the new 5 series bmws 3-3.5ds FKN SHIFT, iv seen one fly off the lights at a stupid speed and another on the motorway on a stupidly steep hill pull out and overtake someone from 70mph-95ish within a split second. they seem rapidddddddd and looK UNREAL for style..

Depends on the seller and how hard you're prepared to haggle. Most garages offer crappy p/x on your car.
