MK1 Escort for me. Consider how much money you will spend in restoration costs. The chances are you won't make it back on the gti or capri.
May on the Escort and Cortina though.

My last (and rather ill-fated) project was a Dolomite Sprint. A true Q-Car and a real sleeper. Wood dash, old man in tweed jacket image, and good for 120 with a sub 9 second 60 dash - it will put the wind up quite a few more modern "warm" hatches.

dont "restore"a mk1 escort and put a v8 rover lump in.
real money is in a restored car that is restored to show room standard.
Mk1 escort will be the best bet :)

Mk1 escort or cortina will both be very hard work but parts readily available, even brand new. If yo go capri, dont bother with the normal 2.8, track down a brooklands version.
205 isnt really an old car and wont take much other than freshen up of bushes, linkages and maybe a repaint to get it back to feeling/looking like it did when it was new.
If you wanting an 80's classic to restore, a car that is shooting up in value is Mk1 Golf gti, or even a mk1 astra Gte.
Parts would be very easy to get for the 205, but I would go for the escort.

how much time and whats the budget. A 205 would be cheap but a restored Escort is worth a small fortune (and will cost a fortune to restore :D)

I'd go for a Mk1 Golf, Jetta, or maybe a scirocco! Wont get any money back on the latter, but i love em!
To me, a 205 Gti is too modern, not much about them to restore just yet. And if there is... you'd easily get a good example cheap anyway!
Mk1 Escort or older cortina would be brilliant, and could potentially get some good money back for it.l

Costs a lot to buy even a basket case!
Mk1 Golf Gti costs a premium
Mk1 Escort even more of a premium!

mk1 escorts are going for big money... a full restored one is anything upto £60k nowadays!! but if you can pick one up cheap then your on a winner !!

He he!! Do what I did...buy yourself a standard looking Ph1 R5 GT Turbo in need of TLC and an engine...
Replace all broken/worn out parts..
Keep looking standard...
Build yourself a 200bhp engine...
Keep looking standard...
Sit back and watch the chavs disappear in your rear view mirror, safe in the knowledge that they didn't know what hit them!!
That was my last one...
Currently I have a very 'Stock' looking R21 turbo with 260bhp under the bonnet!! You gotta laff wen they try it on!!
Seriously though, something like a Dolly Sprint early Ford or Manta would be a blast, only problem being that they all suffer rust and will need copious amounts of welding/fabricating.
But as with all old cars, the secret is to improve them, but not to take away their originality...which is the main reason my R21 T came 2nd in show at the Reno world series event....because it looks original.
Oh and i'd try and decide on what decade to go for 1st...:y:

Youll be hard pressed to find lots of mk1 replacement parts without paying through the nose.
205 still has a lot of parts available through the dealer, and aftermarket suppliers pretty cheap.

I know of a Lotus Cortina that needs a resto, wants £5k for it though. He also has a Lotus sunbeam, think he wants near £3k for that.
Do something a little more original than a escort

Lotus Sunbeam :sweetheart:
There was a couple for sale on 'the bay' last year from the same seller..1st one was a basket case, rotten as a pear and missing quite a lot of stuff and he still wanted £2k for it :panic:
The other was complete but wanted a full resto and he wanted £3k+ for that.
And on the subject of Escorts, my mate is into Mk2's..he did a full resto job on a 1300 Sport a few years back and sold it :wall: although he did get £6k for it.
He's just recently got back into them and ended up buying a 4dr...and he still paid £1800 for that.
Said the price of good Mk2 2dr shells/cars has gone through the roof :fcuk:

You are all still spouting off about the "usual suspects" - Golfs, Escorts and 205's.
If you are going to restore something, go for something with character - how about an Imp or an Alfasud. Try the concours route - it's hard work, but the satisfaction of knowing your car is better than new is immense.
