im going to buy my car on saturday and drive it home.

the only problem is that its not taxed.

i was just wondering if it is illigal to drive the car from the guys house (in nottingham) to my house (in middlesbrough)

ano it sounds obvious, but ive herd a few people say that its not illigal if im only driving it home.

has anyone had/herd the same problem?

cheers

Illegal.... no ways round it or anything.

Cant you just get him to tax it and you'll put money on top of the asking price?

Yes, it is illegal. The vehicle needs to be taxed before you drive it!

its illegal yes - but not all cops will do you for it though!

my dad brought car last year sometime had drive it back with no tax - was spotted but as he had the car purchase receipt in his hand with date and time he brought car - they let him off but depends on the cop i pose lol

yes its illegal, yes you'd get a public whipping if you got caught (there seems a huge amount of DVLA camera vans on the road in the last few months) but other than insuring it first (which you should do too), and getting it taxed (even online) theres not much you can do. How about getting the guy to tax it and paying him the extra cash.

well he dusnt have it insured because it was his son's, and the insurance has ran out.
its abit of a complicated situation because his son has died and ive bought a weeks insurance onit just to get it home.

Best way round this is to take the "New Keeper" section of the V5, the MOT certificate, with your insurance, to the tax office and get the tax before you collect it.

sorry my last post was abit all over the place!

basically do you have to have the registerd keeper and person on the insurance the same or should i be able to get it taxed?

If you've got insurance for it and its got MOT etc. You can pay it online.
Obviously the only thing you could be done for then is not displaying it. But at least you can say you've got MOT Insurance and TAX just dont have the disc because you've just brought it.
Driving it without tax voids your insurance simple!

ILLEGAL mate, id get him to tax it for you then give him the cash on arrival

If you get palled by traffic cops you may be in the shit regardless of having a purchase reciept, the car would be taken from you and inpounded with a fee of over 100 quid to get it back plus yourd obviously be reported aswell, also Plus that figure rises each day the car is in the inpound so if i was you i wouldnt risk it and spend the money on getting tax

If your travelling back via motorway im pretty much sure some motorway routes have cameras that pick up that the car isnt tax etc

Agree, this is what the DVLA tell you to do. But don't drive to the Post Office!

Seems best idea so far ^ :y:

Or if you have some cunning aerodynamic skills, put a pair of wings on the beast, and fly home. Unless you need air tax?

ok looked further, you cannot tax a car on a printout from the internet. Most temp insurance is done via email and not via a cover note through the post which means you cannot get tax by this. However if you are lucky the post office might not notice the fact its a printout and not a proper insurance certificate

just goes from bad to worse :\

JC-Furio

Put it off for a few weeks so he can get it taxed maybe... or if it's too much on him just get the car put in your name, leave it at his until docs come through, then tax it.

Other than that i don't see much option other than trailer :y:

i drove mine home, i was under the impression it was legal !

The only other way would be to drive it home on trade plates.

The trade plates have the tax & insurance on them.
