Just wanted some advice really people. I live in coventry and am a student there. I'm always fiddling with friends cars and doing bits and bobs for them, oil changes, servicing, brake pads, you name it.

I'd like to earn some money doing bits and bobs for people on here. Where do I stand in terms of I'm not a business, I'm a student trying to earn a bit of money? There must be rules on here about advertising such services? A lot of the things I have done for people has been through word of mouth, which is handy.

The reason I originally started doing this was because kwik-fit said they would charge me £65 if I wanted my front brake pads changing. I said no you won't and bought the pads for £10 and did it myself.

Just wanted to know peoples opinions? Do they tend to rely on garages for things like this (perhaps so they can get receipts) or would they prefer to save the money and do it privately?

You would certainly get a fair bit of business off here. I thought about doing oil and filter changes for £20, and just do it at home. But never did it! Lol

Where in cov are you from mate??

Fancy changing a cambelt on a 205 mi16?? Lol

Depends on the person mate, i do it for all my mates for a cheap price, they don't care, suppose it will add a bit of value to a car when you sell it. Never go to kwik fit for anything, they rip you off, i've heard so many bad things about them.

Was thinking perhaps something like.

Oil and filter change £20.

Spark plug change (or take old ones out and clean up) £5

Front brake pads £20

Other jobs on request £?

Not sure what else to offer at the moment. People often overlook simple things like oil changes and then wonder why their car is not running well. Oil changes are one of the best preventative measures that can be taken.

Should I just leave this thread here or should I open up a more detailed, official one?

Could do stuff like servicing, that's basically what you said, do it all in one and charge a bit of a higher price.

Could do exhausts, if you get the tools you could do lowering, think i might start trying to do a bit more of that when i get some money to buy some tools.

Ge0_Ge, depends what you mean by lowering. If it's torsion bars, then I'm steering well clear, sorry! If it's fitting replacement suspension parts like for like, then no problemo!
