Yes but it's punched down differently, so that it forms a direct connection between two PCs.

You use it in place of your ethernet cable in order to transfer files then you plug you normal ethernet back in to get the internet.

Are or can both computers be put on the same network?

For instance bring her laptop to your house and you've got a wireless router? Either that or have both laptop and computer wired into router?

Would save you buying a crossover cable.

computer to computer is a cross over cable like what Danny is meantioning.
if you have a router a regular ethernet cable will be fine.
(1 for each machine)

^ that is also correct.
There normally in "Workgroup" or "MSHOME" by default anyways, but its worth checking.

machines will need to be on the same workgroup i think
^ that is also correct.

Nope. Can be done (fairly/very easily) if the two computers are on different domains / workgroups. Depending on setup.

As long as one can ping the other - easily done. So really just need them to have firewall turned off, and same subnet mask.
