Dont know much about them but my mates has went tits up and my dad (ex mechanic) said you dont usually put a new gearbox in an old car, this true?

He probably means due to the cost and most people would just buy a new car. But it all depends how much you like the car.

Well they have been quoted £1500 for a new gearbox, clutch and fitting :panic:
are saxos bad for the gearboz going?

Second hand (known good condition) you are looking at perhaps £150
Clutch is about £50
Fitting takes an afternoon perhaps.
And they are saying £1500. Am I missing something here?

£1500 are you having a f**king laugh lad?!
a recon box is at least £350-400
second hand, as you said £150
I had a re-con vts box supplied and fitted for £525 if i wanted clutch they wanted extra £50, but i would have got an uprated one.

Wouldn't buy a brand new gearbox mate. Just buy a second hand one or reconditioned one. :y:

brand new boxes aint worth the money when recons are available
forgot to say if u get a recon box u get a gurantee, mine was meant to be 6 months but i had mods so only 3 months.

Well there is a guy on here Mj16 (i think) selling a box for £200 and £30 delivery, they seen one on ebay i think for £300 with 3 months warranty and i put them in contact with somebody who would fit the box and clutch for £185 - £210 so around £500 but they would rather spend the money (which they dont really have) on a an expensive garage :panic:

Cleckheaton Gearbox and Clutch! Search google for them, theyre based somewhere near Derby but do deliver.
They were recommended when i was looking for a box.
£350 for reconditioned VTS gearbox, all brand new internals.
2 years warranty with a certificate supplied for this
Arrived within a week.
Give them a try for sure
