Can anyone help?
I recently bought a 1998 saxo VTR, with a high 122k miles. In great condition, but it makes a 'wirring' noise in 1st, 2nd,3rd but all other gears are fine. It also stops when coasting/dipping the clutch. By the looks of the history that came with the car, the clutch was changed last year.

So anyone had the same problem or know what it might be?

I have an 01 VTR with 65k on the clock.

It had a gearbox change at 67k.

The whirring noise will get progressively louder until it eventually seizes! At least thats what happened to mine! Its very dangerous, and if your doing any more than 30mph then it could probably kill you!! Mine seized mid corner and sent me straight into the kirb!!

I heavily advise you get it changed mate!!

Bugger! How much would a reconditioned box and getting it fitted cost me?

Cheers for the help

Might not be the complete gearbox though!

The bearing in the clutch might be completely shagged!

When i changed my clutch last year, it was wirring quite bad, i had the inards checked out and tht was fine, the release bearing was completely shagged!

I got mine off ebay for £50. Took that chance and its a great gearbox!!

Got it fitted at a citroen dealer for £120. Jobs a goodun!

Also, if you plan on keeping the car, do te clutch at the same time. Its only about £70.

my box was lasted till 100k miles on the dot, not one mile over, not one mile under lmao!

£550 for a vts re-con box supplied and fitted :y: thats the price i paid.

Sounds like the thrust bearing possibly.

Could be the box.

I had mine rebuilt for £180 which included:

New Bearings, Seals and Syncros, and i had different internals fitted.
