outside look for rust, damage etc,if its a vt model make sure it hasnt had a drum conversion and has disks on back.
when you test drive it,listen to the engine, you don't want excessive noise from tappets etc, when driving listen out for gearbox whining, crunchy gearshift etc.
Get the owner to drive so you can see how its been driven,if he bounces off the limiter you know what to do.just :homme: bye to it.
Full Service History is a must.
If over 75k or 4 years since last change, make sure cambelt has been done.
Play in Gears.
Panels been straight.
Warning Lights on Dashboard - do they all go out when started?
Check oil cap for signs of head gasket going.
Check water in radiator.
Probably a few more.

do all the lights come on the dash when the key is turned also, easy enough to remove a warning light bulb,
creamy goo in the oil gap (headgasket)
brakes
suspension
history
previous owners
blowing exhaust?
rust
damaged bodywork
look at the mot certificate and see what has been advised!!

car is said to have a squeak noise from the driers side front wheel? can this be a wheel bearing / something expensive?

depends could be a bearing, driveshaft or something else. driveshafts make a sound under acceleration and turning normally just take it for a test drive and see what happens

If you see the wheel heading for a bush, and the drivers side scraping the floor.. i honestly wouldn't buy it.
Make sure it's not a corsa

End of the day mate your going to have to decide if you want it no one can say what what the sound is without hearing it/ good description of when it occurs.
Oh yeh check for blue smoke out the back too.
