Okey doke guys, a mate of mine is going to look at a golf tomorrow evening & asked me to come along and have a look at it too.
I really dont know the first thing about Golfs, especially older model ones so apart from any obvious knocks, rusted arches/sils etc are there any other problem areas worth checking out? Anyone had one before can give me some tips on what to expect?
The Golf in question is this one:

That one looks big money for huge mileage.
Think they are ok parts can be abit expensive but running shouldnt be to bad

try n haggle the price down alot - that price is alot for the mileage, nice car though

oak green tax, no chance. don't pay over £1k for one. i had a 1985 with less miles than that in rarer metallic silver for under £500.

oh and if you're checking one over have a look on here for mk2 golf specific stuff.
http://www.matey-matey.com/golf_buying_guide6.shtml
main things to be looking for: rust under the sills, wet carpets and other leaks, noisy fuel pumps and 2nd gear syncro rings being fecked. if the car has recently had a gearbox oil change then this can sometimes hide the effect of a worn syncro.

why would you want to live in a golf gti anyway?

Thats a lot of money for a mk2 with 170,000 miles try n get him down. Just look through everything u can, check for any damage. The engine are usally good but check what wheels u are getting cos there are 2 sets on the pictures

neither set, it says in the advert it comes on steelies or standard bbs ra's. another reason it is overpriced.

the interiors in some of the older golfs wear away badly over time, and they are prone to having lots of squeeks.
main thing is the rust though, but they are built to last so you shouldnt see any more than surface rust

Awesome input sharpie & cheers to others, we are just back now & the feeling isnt a good one really!
Bodywork was all pretty outstanding for the age & interior etc was all immaculate. Full service history up to 60k miles then it got pretty hairy after that. Only 4 owners from new was a bonus and the owner for the previous 6 years was one of his mates. Car hadnt been started for quite a while and needed a push start, which we werent to bothered by and got it going, engine was good though i reckon, still fit for its age. Brake pedal travel was a worry, combined with surface rust on the disc made for some pretty worrying braking. Also the car wasnt Taxed and i noticed its £180 for a years worth too.
Its a shame because hes been after this spec of golf for a long time but we just didnt get that buzz that we were expecting!
Hes going to look at a similar one tomorrow and hopefully have a test drive in that too so he can compare he 2.
I'll pass your comments on, cheers again folks! :)

They are nice to drive golf i have drive a mk2 1.8 turbo and a mk3
rev highly in gears, and check for signs of smoking and getting into gear when you change. Stay clear if you can smell smoke or it wont go into gear properly.

I've seen a few people putting that VAG 1.8t 20v engine in them. Fantastic engine though, if i were a golf fan thats what i'd be running i reckon!
I'll just stick to A-series minis
