View Full Version : Reliable but cheap first car?

Can anyone give me any suggestions on what car i should get as my first car? I can only afford to pay about £1500 for the car and i can't afford to pay over £2000 for the insurance. My mum seems to think i will be 'safer' buying a Vauxhall or a Ford as they're cheap to repair, but as one of the members on here said in another thread if i buy a reliable car hopefully i shouldnt have to repair it (much anyway). I'm 19 and held license under a year.

I cant get insured on any 1.4 saxo for under 2k!

Can anyone suggest any cars they think would suit me?

I was looking at a Corsa C as they're pretty new and can get them for about £1500-£1700 and they only cost about the same to insure.

Anyone got anything to say about Pug 106's? I love 'em but i've heard bad things about pugs.

Try a smaller engine Saxo.
I've got a 1.1 and paid about £900 for the insurance, and £1000 for the car 3rd hand.

Not too keen on the shape of the 1.1 saxos tbh.

^ Beat me to it! MK5 Fiesta's are cheap and cheerful.

Only things are HCV (heater control valve), Rust and Coilpacks.

Zs's are mint cars. Insurance group 8 though, i was paying a £1k fully comp with 1 yrs NCB & 3 points....

If theres anything you wanna know about them, ask me. :)

Any others?

Why not? I'm 18 and 1 years NCB and i'm paying £950 tpft on a 1.4 (51 reg). Your a year older with same experience, don't see how you can't get it under 2k mate.

kyle_d

You've got 1 years NCB, makes a lot of difference.. I passed in October 2007, but not got a car yet so got no driving experience.

Plus where i live doesnt help the insurance, its rated as a C area on that postcode thread.

I could probabley get a quote under 2k TPFT but i really dont wanna have to pay tht much insurance and not be fully comp tbh.

think hes probably using something crappy like confused.com those sites are the worst for buying insurance from tbh

1.1 isn't a bad car to start with mate, will let you build your ncb up and is cheap to buy and insure.

But cheap + reliable, aren't something usually put together... saying that, had no problems with mine :y:

Money supermarket is the main one i use lol

Bell, admiral & elephant quote me shit prices.

I don't have anyone in my family to add as a named driver either, only my mum but she has an automatic license which im thinking is gonna be dodgy to add her.

True, are they good cars though? I could pick up a Corsa C fo not much more than a saxo though.

tbh if you like the shape of vt's so much buy a 1.1 saxo with low milage which will be a good reliable first car and buy a vt kit and alloys will cost you pennys tbh

saxos arent particularly well known for being reliable though...
but your on a saxo forum so that speaks volumes really.
i think your mind is made up tbh.

you tried the supermarkets for insurance, i find tesco and asda are reasonable.

I love westies, whats the mileage and lets see a pic please mate. I don't have the money right now though, only about a grand max, will have more in about a month.

And i dont wanna be one of those people that has a 1.1 car and makes it look like a VTS tbh lol if i got a 1.1 the most id do is bang some rims on it.

It's really not lol my head is blagged i well don't know what to get, i dont know a right lot about cars to be honest im just basing my opinions on looks.

Tbh mate your asking on a saxo forum, so you will get alot of people come back and say saxo isnt a bad start but imo in your position you would be better off with a corsa, we both know you dont wanna be repairing it every other day, and yes you do get your 'lucky' saxos that never have a problem but lets be serious alot of saxos do have problems, but then so do alot of other cars, its difficult i would personally go down the corsa c route rather than a 1.1 saxo....

personally i think you should buy this bad boy ! if you search around instead of money supermarket because its poo poo try putting your mother on your policy as a named driver will bring it down by about 10-15% if she hasnt had any claims within the last 5 years hope this helps buddy

your first car i dont think should be based on looks, chances are your gonna knock it about a bit.
my first car was a micra...as far as reliability goes they are way up there.
get one that has been owned by an old lady (as most are!) and it will be kind to you.
mine was a 1994 and it had 2 mots while i had it and passed both times needing no work at all.
never failed to start.
loads of bits around in scrappys.
not many young people have them so insurnace is relatively low.

just an idea.
i know its not a 'cool' car but hey.

Just done a quote on piggys westie on moneysupermarket and kwik fit came up with £2032 with my mum on the policy even though she has an auto license, i tried doing a quote direct with kwik fit and they didnt give me a price coz i put it has been modified, i was only gonna declare the rims!

Could i make them give me this price? I tried quinn direct and i put the registration in and then it told me to pick a type of saxo and west coast wasnt there  so i tried a couple of different ones and they were bring prices between £3-4k.

My mum's with kwik fit so If i could get that price i'd be well chuffed, although the next closest price on money supermarket was £3000 lol

And i see what people are saying about the 1.1s i just dont wanna be skint as fook and have a car i dont like that much, id rather be skint as fook and have a nice looking car :).

its a bad perception that saying french cars break down loads!!!
mine has been loooked after since i got it and the only things that have gone wrong are the heater matrix( i broke it, didnt break under wear and tear), gearbox (from me being too eagre going round mallory) and the PAS pump where one of the graphite nodes was worn out.....

you get out of a car what you put in so at the end of the day yes it has had a few problems but yet very few and thats because ive serviced it regularly and always allowed it to get warm before revving it over 4k

tbh you will find a mint example of a corsa b or c for that price and they are ubber reliable if they havnt been thrashed within an inch of there lives!
