View Full Version : HU stopped working

Hi, I realise that this problem could be anything, but I thought I'd try incase someone can come up with some things to check before I pay someone to look at it.

I went to put some new speakers in the front of my car, wired one up (is a 5inch with a seperate tweeter - with crossover). Plugged my HU back in and the HU is now not getting any power.

I have checked ALL leads, checked the stereo fuses and banged my head a few times in frustration.

The central locking has also stopped working (may be related or may be a seperate problem).

My amp and sub both have power going to them, but the HU doesnt. The only thing I can think is that the HU is broken - but seeing as it has worked fine for 3 years and all I did was move my amp and cut wires to the stock speakers and replace it seems a bit weird that it would just break.

Any suggestions for other things to check would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance :)

Checked the car fuse box?

I can't see how the amp and sub can have power going to them if the headunit doesn't? because the remote cable runs from the headunit to the amp to turn it on.

I have looked at the wiring diagrams in the stickies, and my stereo is wired up differently....

I have seperate power going to the HU through the same lead that powered the manufacture HU, then I have two seperate leads from the battery - one to the amp and one to the active sub. Amp, sub and HU turn off when the ignition is off and on when ignition is on (although atm everything bar the HU turns on). It has worked okay for 3 months in my saxo (since I bought it) and for 3 years in my old motor.

Think it's worth a try to rewire differently (although it did work ok)?

I checked the fuse for the HU under the glove box and the fuse is fine.

I think that's set up like mine, apart from I only have one amp. Are you sure you put the all your wires are right going into the headunit? Didn't rewire the speaker wire instead of power? Always best to check obvious and silly things first.

EDIT: Try using a mates headunit to test it!

All i did wiring wise was snip the speaker wires in the passenger door and wire them to the new speaker and then join the same wires to the crossover for the tweeter (and one previous to the 5 inch). I checked all wires for about 2 hours to make sure I hadnt jolted one loose (this is where the head-banging and frustration came from!!).

Then I checked the fuses, and then I ran out of ideas... :(

This is the first time I have put speakers in which have crossovers and seperate components (5inch and tweeters). I can't imagine that going from the old speaker cable to these components could cause my HU to get no power (but could it? if i wired wrong?)

I have a spare HU that I might be able to try.

Im pretty sure its a blown fuse mate!

My nead unit just randomly turned off, and i thought, oh no! Here we go!

But then i got out, locked the door, and only one of the doors locked! So i looked im my owners manual for the fuse which powers this, and sure enough, it was blown!

Why its blown i dont know..

Maybe because you have the polarity of the speakers wrong, which makes the amp have an eppi!

The amp isnt involved atm, I decided to test the first speaker straight from the HU and this is when I realised I had a problem.

Coonper - did you have a blown fuse for the Central locking that also effected the HU? Or have two fuses blow? I only checked my stereo fuse which was ok. Would be a saving grace to be just a fuse !!!

Ahh! lol

You need to check the owners manual mate!:y:

There is one fuse that controls several things... And yes, the head unit, central locking, and i think the boot light was affected.

Cant remember which fuse it was though mate, sorry.

If you get REALLY stuck then i'll have a look in my book for you!:y:

That is enough info, thanks :)

Gonna go check my boot light now. I looked in the owners manual and saw a stereo fuse - so this is the only one I checked. Didnt think to check other fuses as I didnt realise my central locking wasnt working til I put the door panel back on and nothing happened when I tried the "zapper".

Will report back!!

I wreckon it wil be the same fuse as mine! It was quite a high rated fuse, like 20-25 amps.

So i replaced it with the same, and it just blew again, so i upped it to a 30amp and its all good 6 months down the line!:D

10/10 Coonper, or so it seems!!

All my interior lights are not working (didnt realise as it was a hot summers day when I was working!), central locking and HU!! I checked the fuse which is 20amp and it is blown!!! Yippee!!! Sounds like a cheap solution to my problem, so (fingers crossed) I can finish my speaker install after work tomorrow!!

Thanks again, and I will try and rep you again, but I dont think it will let me.

yup, i was fretting a little seeing as I checked the wiring and (what i thought was) the only fuse controlling the HU.

Gonna try and finish the speaker install tomorrow and will be so happy to have tunes again!!

Hmm, could be...

Is it standard?

Cant remember for definite as its a few years since i had that headunit but it might possibly have a fuse for the headunit itself?

Try the head unit in someone elses car. Thats the easiest way to find out if its knackered.

Or you could go to halfrauds and try it.
