hello,
I am getting a grinding noise coming from the engine bay, but doesnt always happened. its mainly set off by coming off the gas, or changing gear. the noise stops at low speeds, altho i get a whine like a wheel bearing. it makes the noise in neutral as well, whilst moving.
its a mrk 2 vts.
any suggestion would be appreciated.

Clutch release bearing,or discs & pads,I would go with the 1st option though.

i dont think its the clutch release bearing, as i had one go on my previous car and it didnt sound like this noise. plus it still makes the noise if the clutch is pressed of not.
i have got a recording from my phone, but duno how to post it. lol
also i would say you no the noise when you pull a cupboard/ table a cross the floor sumin like that. its very loud tho.

thats great, thanks for posting that up...
The noise is very loud, and appears after getting up to around the 40mph mark, and when changing gear or pressing the clutch pedal that noise comes into play. Either with my foot on or off the clutch the noise stays there until around 20mph, sometimes even until i fully stop. I can also feel a vibration through the floorpan... but i just cant work it out.
My mate said that it could have been a CV joint - but after inspection this has no leaks and the boot is fully sealed (just had suspension work done a month ago so its all new grease etc etc).
Funny thing is, that the noise doesnt appear when the car is under load... ie flooring it or going up the revs - no noise! Only when off the gas, changing gear or coasting.... any ideas?
cheers

i dunno mate im not sayin thats what it is but mines been doin it for a month and my gearbox destroyed itself last night. Is you gear change smooth? Does it ever slip out of gear or anything? Does your gearstick have a lot of movement on it even if its in gear?

also next time it makes the noise put you leg on the centre console area see if there is more vibration than normal

Yeah the latter is exactly as you say... vibration from where the centre console is
Gearchanges fine.... never pops out of gear etc etc no abnormal gearstick movement - although i thought that was always linked to the gear linkages...
Hmm better perhaps start thinking about a new gearbox then...
The noise comes in when changing gear and actually selecting up or down gears as you go... sound familiar to you mate?

well i first noticed it when i was lettin off the gas at about 40 and over like you said im not sayin it is that it could be unrelated and my car just has another problem with it, dont go out and buy a new gearbox but could perhaps get someone to check it over for you mate.
