i am a little confused about what pre out slots do, i have found a HU i am interested in that has 2 pre out slots.
Does this mean that I can just hook up an active sub to one of the pre outs and 6X9's to the other without the need of a amp?
cheers

can put active sub (built in amp) to one yes,
But to attach anything to any of the pre-outs you will need to have them on an amp. Then Phono leads connected to the pre-out.

ok, so I can connect a active sub to one of the pre outs yes?
O,also, does an active sub have to get run of the battery like a normal amp? cheers

ok, and im not really that good with car sound systems- i mainly deal with PA's and other sound systems. How hard is it to connect the wires to the battery. is it just a case of having two wires touching the + and - on the battery, then running the wire to the inside of the car?
Whats the best way to get it from the bonnet to the main section of the car?

One wire to power (+). Then earth the amp to the boot floor (metal).
Feed wire through to engine bay, through the bulkhead, via a hole (with a grommet in it) just under the glovebox.

ok, and could i even tape the + wire to the + bit on the battery, also, is it wise to have more than one amp hooked up to the battery like this?
I wonderin also, if i really wanted to, could i just buy a battery, hide it under a chair or something and then run the amp(s) off that or will it run the battery out really fast if I do that?
cheers

Battery will die really quickly if you do that , as it has no constant charging going to it. (ie: alternator)
Theoretically (sp) you could hook up more than one amp to the battery, but there may not be any need, depending on size of amp.
As you could have them 'daisy-chained' on each other. Power from one going to other aswell. (interlinked)
And definitely wouldn't tape the wires to the battery, as this could proove very unreliable.
Just get ring connector/battery terminal connectors from Halfords or the like.
Although, most amp wiring kit power wires come with these on already.
