Yeah but I believe they take a fee from the money you get back?

Yes - you can cancel at any time, but you won't get NCB for the year.
Money back will depend on the policy/small print/if you have claimed.
read the small print whether it allows you to cancel at any time or not...

You can, but you'll get charged a cancellation fee.

I have done it. With direct line, when my car got scrapped.
Basically they rebated the money i had left (as i paid upfront) minus some interest.
Alternatively they offered to keep the policy open until i sorted out another car. Basically paused the policy.
Hope this helps
