Literally just turned the keys and the battery works and you can hear the fuel pump but it just wont start the engine, there is no ticking over just absolutely nothing from the engine! - the engine management light stays on when the ignition is at its final setting...

Please help!

Does the engine crank when u turn the key fully or not?
If it doesnt is the battery fully charged and do u have an immobiliser fitted?

no, the engine doesn't do anything, there is just a metallic sound just a tap when i turn the ignition, the battery light is on and its functioning, but the engine itself doesn't start or even attempt to fire up.
No immobiliser fitted, and the battery is new and fully charged.

on a vtr.
the one that was loose for me
was right handside of engine. side towards battery
middle of engine
straight down
you will see a alan key bolt onto the engine just with a loop ring wire on it.
if this is loose
mayb be your problem

surely if you earth it, it wil set alight i kno this as i have a fucked ignition and i have to hot wire to start the engine and i was told not to let the clip holding the wires togther touch the steering column as it would earth and blow all the fuses and potenially set the car on fire!!!!

faulty/sticky starter motor would be my suggestion. give the starter a hit with a hammer and try start it, if that fails try to bump start the car and if it starts i'd replace the starter
