Someone reversed into my rear quarter panel in a car park. Hardly a mark on their vehicle but mines dinged and scratched.

I was sat a bit back at the give way waiting for traffic when they pulled out of their parking spot and went into me.

They got a bit irate and their passenger ran off, I had someone in the car with me.

They have asked me to get quotes to get it done privately and all have come back over £400 (some in excess of £600).

I havent gone back to them yet with the prices, My excess is £400!.

Where do I stand if they want to go through insurance? What can I do to reduce my costs (I could do without forking out the excess)?

Anyone got any advice,

Cheers all,

Quick

If the accident is the other person's fault you will not have to pay the excess!

Did u exchange details as u should? Names, addresses, phone numbers, names of insurance companies etc etc? U will need them if they feel the quotes u provide r excessive.

I had a "hit and run" tw*t hit my old westcoast in a car park once. Must of hit it pretty damn hard as it was moved into the space behind. I was in Tesco at the time shopping and when i came out someone got the number plate of the person who hit me which was lucky. Its now 6 months down the line, i have witnesses and the people that hit me are still disputing, when i say disputing they havent even said that they didnt do it so i have taken it to the small claims court. Being a saxo, my car cost about £600 to fix altogether which i have had to pay myself so far. Hopefully i will be getting all money back when the claim is over.

If you have got all the details then you should be ok, if they dispute then you should of got names of witnesses etc. You shouldnt have to pay if it was not your fault, however depending on how badly damaged, the age of the car etc the insurance company may consider it a write off.

Got all the details etc, I'll phone them later to get policy number as thats all im missing. They havent admited liability but its clearly their fault.

Do I go through their insurers or mine?

you tell your insurance company. They basically get the repairs done to your car and claim off the other insurance company.

Personally I'd do it all through the insurance. Their fault so you won't have to pay any excess

Notify your insurer. They will then proceed with the claim, thats the service u pay for. Be aware tho, it MAY affect your NCD. An NCD is not a No Blame Discount. Its worth clarifying that with your insurer in advance and telling them exactly what happened and how. Good Luck.

You have to phone your insurance, give them the details of the guy that hit you and they will sort the rest out!!

Spiderpig, Spiderpig, does whatever a spiderpig does....LOL

You may have to pay the excess to start off with, but you'll get it back if it is there fault. I will always go through other peoples insurance if I have an accident that is their fault, to teach them a lesson!

After having an accident at work in the van that was blatently his fault, he was kicking and screaming at me saying it was my fault....was writing eveything down he was yelling at me and saying nothing back....then I calmy asked for his insurance certificate and driving licence as the accident was clearly his fault, he showed me his licence but refused to show me his insurance - so I replied "OK, you clearly got no insurance, just gonna call the police then" - he produced immediately ;)

Thanks for the advice all, Just for reference incase anyone needs to know.

Where an accident isnt your fault and the car is driveable you can wait for the other party to admit liability and you wont face having to pay your excess which in some case for young drivers is stupid £££.

Can highly recommend Mike's advice too and writing it all down as I did too, if you can drag a member of the public over or any third party witnesses thats a major bonus! Then if they say something or admit liability you have someone to back you up.

A bit hard to remember in the heat of the moment though!

Thanks,

some advice for you and iam being very serious, see if you notice a dent in your car,not a crease, push it out within the hour and it wont mark the car, leave it until the next day and it has to be fixed properly, ive seen this alot of times,i cant explain how this is but its for real!

as said, as long as they accept liability you wont have to pay your excess. see if they agree to pay for it out of insurance though, less paperwork.
