he has been recieving letters from direct line for about 6 months saying that a customer of their's has been hit by my brother when my brother hasn't hit no one. we have no idea how they got my brothers name or address, they are now giving my brother 14 day to sort out £600. it all seems wierd as i thought he should of been contacted by his insurance company not direct line. the letter says they have contacted his insurance company but have had nothing back. we haven't heard nothing from my brothers insurance company in the slightest.

is this serious or a con? the letter appears to be the real deal

what should he do?

its a con, they wouldent sk for money of him directly for a crash, it would come from the insurance company, ring direct line and his insurance.

could be fake, get direct line's number from there website, any number on the letter could be dodgy.

This might sound a bit crazy, but after recieving the first letter did your bro not think about contacting his insurance company asap?

Dont hand over any cash.

Do ring Directline & his insurance company asap.

Tell them the situation. Tell his insurance company the situation, hopefully he took out a policy with legal cover so they will fight the claim against him.

The third party will need some sort of proof. I.e damage caused and some other sort which links him to the claim.

Take pictures of your brothers car in its current state asap all angles for proof make sure it has the date on the pictures.

Get witness statements to say where he was at the time you have been accused

Also if both companys have no records involve the police, infact do that anyway.

Unfortunately, it could well end up a 50/50 though matey

Good luck & hope this helps:)

Someone could of been through your rubbish bins mate, got your name and address, all sorts, scanned an old car insurance letter, blanked it over then re-typed over it and posted it through your door.

I wouldnt be too worried mate, insurance companys do not do that!! (Ask for money direct)

dont hand anything over, sounds like a scam, insurance companies will not contact you directly for settlements. where is the other sides evidence to show the damage etc as mentioned above.

i rang his insurance companie it is the real deal. they said they had sent him a claim form which we haven't recieved so they are sending another one to say he wasn't at the accident and didn't hit noone.

wouldnt worry about it, heres a few things you might want to think about:

- description of your bro, is it accurate?
- do they have pics of damage on both cars
- how many witnesses
- is there car still damaged? if not then theres no proof
- your bro needs witnesses to back himself up about not being there
- has your bro had is plates cloned

if what you say is true and no accident took place then stick to your guns and do not admit fault.

They are giving him 14 days to get £600 through small claims I believe. He doesn't happen to drive a Honda Civic does he?

Just do as said and fight it all the way.
