On a scale of 1/10 how stupid would it be to get a 106 gti at 17.. Considering it.. Discuss :y:

Extremely..

I got BUA when i was 17 and i think i spent most my time paying off the scale of 2 grand insurance than i did driving the car

Bad move, Saxo VTR for your first year, 106 gti second year

And they aint exactly the best car to start driving on the road with as i learned a few times

Read the post below re: the 02 vtr getting smashed and think carefully.

Also bear in mind insurance will be huge and you'll never see that money again.

It's your choice, I was quite happy driving shitters until I got a couple of years experience and ncb behind me, best way imho.

do an insurance quote, if you can afford it and want then go for it

just drive it sensibly

Danr
25th June 2008, 17:06
Insurance will be the problem. Paying to much just isn't worth it imo. The actual speed of the thing could be if your not sensible but older people bin them all the time so not really a huge issue.

Krys_23
25th June 2008, 17:08
I'd be pretty sensible in it i must say.. Would be about 2k in parents name lol

Your pretty spot on i must say

Krys not saying dont do it mate, I mean look i had

2 106 gti then 3 vtrs and im now just comfortably going to be able to insure a vts

Its better to insure it once you have the good road experience, VTR is quick enough until you say ''right im ready for something faster'' You will enjoy it far more as well

If you get one, Dont go nuts cause 99% you will stack her and just be devastated or crushed

Im 650 quid years no claims at 19 with the vtr.

106 gti when i just past my test was 1980 third party fire and theft lol

Second 106 was 1700

You can modify a vtr for the money you spend on insurance lol

CampDavid
25th June 2008, 17:09
Personally, I'd get something slow as fuck but fun and go from there. The 205 XS is an absolute hoot to drive and should be cheap enough to insure. Failing that a Derv 306 is a good move.

Driving costs fuck loads, no point in making it cost more. It takes a few years for most people (self included) to realise that spending £2k on insurance is pap

Lost they keys for the vtr and its pretty fucked tbh so i'm not bothering with it so.. Thinking about a gti.. maybe an mg zr.. Like i said undecided yet on what to go for next.

Danr
25th June 2008, 17:12
My friend had a 205 xs as David mentioned. Legend car. Cheap to do up as well due to the overall parts on a 205. 205 Rallye would be an amazing first motor and dirt cheap to drive etc.

So the old vtr shit the bed?

MG ZR 1400's are alright and not expensive to insure

106 rallye? 1600 8valvers?

VTR?

Quiksilver?

Danr
25th June 2008, 17:13
MG ZR's do seem quite high insurance for a 1.4. Handling won't be so fun either.

too much on insurance, just buy a civic haha

Krys 106 rallye, Get it done

simple answer = YES

when im 19 and been driving 2 years, insurance will still be just over £1000 for me ona 106gti

Spanky
25th June 2008, 17:25
MG ZR's do seem quite high insurance for a 1.4. Handling won't be so fun either.

And where do you get the idea from????

I have just as much fun in my ZR as i do in the Saxo, they handle VERY well and you can giv them alot of stick before they giv in to sliding around :y:

wallsy
25th June 2008, 17:26
Id say if you drove sensibly and could afford it then yeah. But being 17 with no driving experience with a fairly powerful first car could end up bad...

Ashleyp
25th June 2008, 17:26
its also more fun after having a 1.1 to getting something bigger.. i found this with my VTR.. didnt seem much faster untill i drove the 106 again.. just had no power.. cant wait to get my hands on a 106gti next year january :)

25th June 2008, 17:28
not really
just dont drive like a cunt
you wont crash

not really
just dont drive like a cunt
you wont crash
your be ok!

someone who sees it as i do!

i just got a VTS as my first car, a bit stupid i know. everyone is in my ear including my mates :( "its too fast for you" "your gonna kill yourself" "who do you think you are?" etc etc etc it just doesnt end,
but my parents trust me and allowed me to buy it, and i see myself as sensible and i just wanna drive it properly to prove everyone wrong.

i appreciate insurance will rape me but im going for it lol, if i wrap it up due to stupid/wreckless driving on my part then everyone can point the finger and say i told you so

sooo......
however unsensible it may be, if you want it, have it lol
and take note of the 998855837 people who say take your time lol

Ashleyp
25th June 2008, 18:03
i agree with you hodgins that if your sensible thats good! way too many twats on the road now..

but insurance is stupid.. unless you have rich parent or more money than sence, imo its not worth it

as i said.. the fun factor is there when you go from a 1.1 to a vtr / s :y:

a17vts
25th June 2008, 18:10
Well I got my VTS when I was 18. But before that I had a Escort RST and a Fiesta RST at 17!

But I was stupid, I use to pay £1500 insurance on my VTS when I was 18 TPFT and then I use to pay £2400 on my escort RST when I was 17.

Ashleyp
25th June 2008, 18:12
They're basically the same car!

different actually

Ashleyp
25th June 2008, 18:14
Also if you're driving it slow what's the point in having a VTS? You have to walk before you run, as the saying goes.

you could say that with any car.. just because you own an M3 doesnt mean you do well over 100mph constantly.. if that was the case everyone would have 1.1s

Ocego_VTR
25th June 2008, 18:14
NO seriously don't just get a VTR or something similar, i am doing my driving test soon and 2bh i dont want to be banned and have to do it all again, you've got the rest of your life for fast cars.

pug306_ok
25th June 2008, 18:23
Well I suppose it's ok for most people.

Due to the area I live in, I can't afford to insure anything bigger than my current car (1.4 8v). When I'm 21 though I want to get something like a Seat Leon Cupra.

Ashleyp
25th June 2008, 18:26
i understand your point mate.. i just dont think its valid in my opinion.. i myself have a VTR, but dont feel like i constantly have to speed around and race people as it has a stereotype of a boy racer car..

and your contradictiong your self about the M3 saying young people should buy fast cars because it asks for trouble, yet you say its pointless having a fast car unless you take it down back roads to open it up

i get what your saying though.. i know somone who died because he thought it was cool to speed and drive like a twat.. its the mentality of people "it wont happen to me" thats the problem

Ocego_VTR
25th June 2008, 18:26
the idea of a 106 gti as a first car is stupid 2bh should stick with VTR

Mikey
25th June 2008, 18:34
i had one at 17...and wraped it. to fast for 17 FACT

Ocego_VTR
25th June 2008, 18:35
2bh i see both your opinions but what people buy and run and do is simply up to them.

Ocego_VTR
25th June 2008, 18:35
Mikey how much did you pay on insurance???

Mikey
25th June 2008, 18:36
600 a year...trade insurance

just got my quote on my VXR 1300 fully comp..not to bad

im 20

Row_Row
25th June 2008, 18:36
my first car was a vts.. well apart from borrowing mums .. but blew the engine up so had to get something more fun haha !! if u can afford a GTI go for it !!

Ocego_VTR
25th June 2008, 18:39
ahh thinking of buying a VTR once i have passed my test in augest well hopefully :P

Ashleyp
25th June 2008, 18:40
There's a difference between driving a car daily to work/nipping out to the shops and taking a car out for a b road blast. I presume that you yourself are a young driver and lack the necessary skills to control a car at speed pushing down country roads. This relates back to my original point that young drivers should start out in slower cars and start to learn from there. You also mention racing people, which is retarded and a completely different matter altogether, but shows the mentality of younger drivers.

not disagreeing with that atall.. yes i am a young driver.. but do not feel the need to race people or drive like a twat, i respect other road users etc

i too started off with a 1.1 before i got my vtr..

however i feel your point of the B roads sounds like you think its ok to go speeding down these type of roads? not sure if thats what your saying though.. weve all pushed are cars a little at some point.. knowing when the right time is seems to be the key point your trying to make here?

Mikey
25th June 2008, 18:40
i didnt drive like a twat with my gti..but you get cocky..the only time i got silly. it went wrong...badly wrong lol

Ashleyp
25th June 2008, 18:42
i didnt drive like a twat with my gti..but you get cocky..the only time i got silly. it went wrong...badly wrong lol

lol yeah i get what you mean mikey.. its a shame that for some people it goes even more wrong and they put lifes in danger.

as said. sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you dont

like i said about someone i knew.. he thought it was good to go speeding everywhere.. hes dead now.. paid the ultimate price

Ocego_VTR
25th June 2008, 18:42
lol what actually happened mikey if you dont mind saying?

Mikey
25th June 2008, 18:44
i went round a bend at aout 45 to 50. in a 60 zone!!

back end kicked out. straight into a 200 year old tree, needless to say the tree won. the gti bounced off the tree, back end spun around into the same enbankment...car was fcuked! engine was under the front seats...the radiator had pinged off 100 yards down the road. battery, never found it lol..mess...the only savable thing was a mirror and leather seats...

Ocego_VTR
25th June 2008, 18:47
fook i hope you take it easy in the VXR.

Mikey
25th June 2008, 18:47
lol very easy!

most of the time...i am human...witha 195bhp car.

Ocego_VTR
25th June 2008, 18:50
lol you should get the courtney sport upgrade 230bhp FTW!!

Mikey
25th June 2008, 18:51
lol...its 600 quid.. i get a bonus thursday from work of 1500 quid...HHMMMM

Ocego_VTR
25th June 2008, 18:55
haha would it understeer like the astra or vectra with 230bhp ??

Mikey
25th June 2008, 18:56
lol dunno about that, but it would kill the astra with that power and extra torque.

Ocego_VTR
25th June 2008, 18:58
yerr, btw you got any mods on it so far??

You've had a vtr at 17 and were absolutely fine, I take it you've nearly drove for a year Krys?

There's no reason why not as long as you're sensible, but everyone states they'll be sensible, I know I did... wrote off my 1.1 through idiocy, accidents happen in all sorts of vehicles and speed is a major factor... just be sensible. :y:

Jamie
25th June 2008, 20:27
Not if your careful,

I had a mk2 VTR for my car at 17 and everyone said id crash it you should have a 1.0 but i was fine..

I then got a 206 gti 180 as i was turning 19 again everyone said its too powerful and be careful youl crash it..

Now im 21 with a focus ST and no one has said it so far lol.

Tbh its all about the individual touch wood ive always been good and had no problems. I respect that if i fk up i fk myself up for as long as it takes to get out of it.

eoey
25th June 2008, 20:32
depends how mature and resposible you are, i started in a starlet gt never had a crash but look back on it now and the car was very fast and if i drove like a twat id be in huge debt with nothing to show..

Had a vtr when i was 16 and it's just dying at my uncles..

Sitting my test in september, Seen a nice vtr on PH with polished vts rims wouldn't mind a vtr but i don't know :n:

saxmaster
25th June 2008, 22:07
tbh people can say im a sensible driver bla bla but it takes one mistake to wrap it round a tree
but as also stated fast cars dont drive fast constantly
had my vtr at 16 furio at 17 and as some will no i prefer my furio not only cos the vtr has a kit but the furio is a better drive
and tbh you can still kill yourself in a 900cc car as you could in a 6l v6
at the end of the day it comes down to luck , not skill or driving ability etc

MK2SLAG
25th June 2008, 22:09
id say its the mental ability of the idiot driving, most people love showing off to people and end up smashing

Hodgins91
25th June 2008, 22:34
its always going to be one of those things that can be looked at in hundreds of ways, if you drive like a cunt then its your own fault if you wrap up. theres the small majority that do and make it look bad for the majority, and as previously said, just because you have the engine ability doesnt mean you have to cane it everywhere, what have you got to prove at the end of the day?

paddy88
25th June 2008, 22:42
As long as you dont go crazy in it and are sensible! it will save you in the long run as u will want one after driving a saxo vtr for a year or so! howevere you may not appriciate the speed of it if it is your first car, however if you go from a vtr then to a vts/gti you will really feel the power you have! just a suggestion n e way!

same answer as every1 else really m8, i really want a gti 2, but i went second best and got a vtr, im going to save up abit 4 the insurence i pay 162 a month with quinn only been driving since nov so its all good might have a look when i get my years no claims, i had a mini for my first car was gr8 fun on roundabouts and cornering was emense! awesome car!

Pat_Vts
26th June 2008, 00:38

just a example and im paying 1.5k full comp on a vts

26th June 2008, 01:01
Start with something small, and cheap to run, ei. 1.1 and learn how to work on the car with an old haynes manual. Then save your money for when your 19/20 and get a gti and do some mad tuning. You will have more fun and experience that way in the long run.

Boyes
26th June 2008, 04:20
yes pointless Imo might your throwing stupid money on insurance why not wait a few years get a couple of years no claims and wait till your 19+ (Premium drops alot for modified cars) then get one.

saxo_asa
26th June 2008, 08:37

I could barely afford my westie at 17 most insurers wouldn't even give me a quote. If you can do it i don't see why not but don't rush into buying one just because you're desperate to own one.

Also i'll agree with everyone that said about "my first car experience" it's almost guarenteed you will knock it about a bit or scrape it no matter how careful you are (people seem to be attracted to new drivers). It's more fun to upgrade later, would you really want to risk a spanking 106gti?

piggy123
26th June 2008, 09:00
mate if you want to have a relatively good car thats modified a little and still not stupidly slow buy a furio/westcoast/quicksilver

i happen to have my west coast going up for sale as soon as i have reverted it back to nearly std.

im looking for 1200ono with it reverted back to standard except it will be lowered and on alloys and some 6 by 9's with a CD player fitted

thread below:
http://www.saxperience.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=119690

had a full service 500 miles ago and full rebuild 5000 miles ago when i first bought it to get it completely back to new!

whattttttttttt

trust me you want a cheap slow car that can handle

personally i think a VTR is a bit much but i know for a fact the insurance will be rediculous!!!!!!!
it will be bad enough on a 1.4!

i would say 8/10 (1 being lowest!)

VTR at 17 is about as quick as you should sensibly go. They're perky enough for a 1.6, either that or a Zetec S. Cars like a 106 GTi or VTS at 17 will be a bit of a handful for an inexperienced driver...

Actually it DOES mean you're inexperienced. How many years have you been driving on road regularly? Exactly, not too many I'm guessing. Car park burnouts in your burberry cap don't count for experience.

Actually it DOES mean you're inexperienced. How many years have you been driving on road regularly? Exactly, not too many I'm guessing. Car park burnouts in your burberry cap don't count for experience.

Never done a burn out
Never wore a burberry cap
And when I do drive I keep it sensible because they know I don't have much money and can only afford to pass my test once , and when I've passed my test im guaranteed a job, the only thing im missing is my licence (said the gaffa of the place)

Well my neighbour didn't have a clue about cars and about 3-4 months later the sump went and the engine seized.. But the escort's are so dead it's quite amusing.

lol soo.. since when did driving illegally become sensible?

its not sensible when you get caught and lose your license before you even have one is it

Think its been said 100 times already but a 106 Gti isn't the best first car. I'd aim for group 6 or lower.

You can still enjoy driving a "slower" car, and a lot of first cars get introduced to a hedge at some point as you find your limits!

get whatever car you want dude.
my first actual car was a 1.2 clio. then a vauxall tigra. then a metro... then a 106. a few shiit cars and a few vtrs... i wish i went for a fast car straight away. because u try and drive slower cars like a convict. if you know the powers there you calm down a lot.

ive been fortunate to drive very fast cars. the first properly fast one was a type r. i fell in love with v tec. then got back in my tigra and i was like oh shit my 1.4 is actually really slow! so i calmed down loads. along the way i also drove scoobys, octavias, a few more vtecs, an evo, a williams, a few 182s, and some other fast cars here n there.
how is it possible i write off a 1.4 metro.. but not the type r?
cos i drove like a cunt in the shitmobile.
take nobodys advice and do what you want! drive how u want and u will see the learning curve. you will either learn a lesson because u crashed a car, or cant afford to run it. but hey everyone has to learn at some point.
have fun and let us know how you get on.
