They come in 1.4(105), 1.8(120 & 160), 2.0 (diesel)

My bro just bought a yellow mk2 1.4. It's a great car so far but it hasn't been used much since he got it coz he can't drive yet. So far so good tho :y:....................

These cars fall apart! The 1.8 160bhp is also pretty slow.

Leemc2008
25th June 2008, 20:22
Yeh.. as above

1.4 105 bhp
1.6 120bhp
1.6 160bhp - VVC version
2.0 115bhp Turbo Diesel

These cars fall apart!

Very True.. its a Rover 25 with a glued on bodykit.. My friend has the diesel version.. the side skirt fell off and the spoiler came unstuck!

Any more reviews on them? My mate has just got the 1.4 ZR he really likes it so far only had it 3-4days.
I learned to drive in one and wasnt overally impressed with build quality tbh. Wasnt that powerfull from what i can remember although i never throttled it in my lessons lol

thats mine i got 3months ago.

I can't moan about the build quality, sure if you go out in a new Seat/Volkswagon its got nothing on them, but not worlds appart.

Quite nippy, good for a 1.4 anyway, quite comfortable at 70mph, not much noise etc

The clutch is a basterd to get get used to when you first drive one.

Nice one on pistonheads at the moment.

tbh i didnt find the seat comfy when i was learning in one. Most cars sit nicely at 70 now a days though.
It is a bit of a tarted up 25 with a bumped up price.

aaahhhh so it's not just my bro's clutch that's realllllyyy weird!! We thought it was because of the fact it's not been used for ages but it's not really getting any better :err: Would you say it's really really difficult to find the biting point?

mattchewone
26th June 2008, 07:34
I found it ok when i was learning in one to find the biting point tbh. Just didnt think it was that great to drive was ok but nothing special. The one i drove had poor build quality tbh rattled and made all sorts of noises.

Whats the 1.4 like power/speed?

Danr
26th June 2008, 07:42
A lad i know has one. Has had no problems with it at all. That's the 1.4. Not bad motors.

They're ok, nothing special in terms of drive quality tbh. 101bhp but it doesn't feel much. Nothing compared to a vtr in terms of fun

The diesel ones are the only ones without the head gasket failure problem as well so if anyone buys one that's the one to go for tbh

Do the diesel ones have a BMW derived engine? Like the Land Rovers did? (TD5)

leeroybrown

TD5 is a straight 6 engine, MG ZR is the old 2.0 Rover one

Zach
26th June 2008, 09:38
Since when was a TD5 6 cylinder engine?

I've only seen an inline 5 in the Landies.

Sorry getting mixed up with the range rover

TD5 was a 5 cyclinder engine

IIRC the 160 is the same time to 60 as a VTS, maybe a couple of tenths quicker. I also think the 1.8 engine is the same as the one in the Lotus Elise.

I drive a ZS (below) so have a soft spot for MG's, I think the ZR is great looking car

I much prefer the ZS over the ZR.

Still think there not that great but all down to personal preference. Just thought the ride was really noisy and wasnt as punchy as expected from a 1.4.

They were racing these when I went to Donington, I prefer the MK1 to the MK2

mate has a mk2 had it for a good year or so, no problems so far he loves it and thinks its rapid.

Stepdad had one before the scoobie, the 1.4 was quite nippy, hard suspension, cornered ok but for motorway travelling im sure he was getting 0mpg revving it at speed lol. Now motorway speed is sitting on about 230lb/s of torque heheh

everyone i know whos had one hasnt had a gasket problem, just luck i guess.

The ZS is quite nice, prefer it to the ZR tbh... especially since it can come with the growly 2.5 V6 with 177bhp. Probably my favorite out of the Z-series MGs...
