View Full Version : Crossover question

I recently installed a set of DLS R5A components.
The manual states the jumpers in the crossover change the tweeter level. Does this refer to amplitude level or frequency crossover point?
Cheers.

i would assume its amplitude level mate

i doubt ud be able to change the freq boundry between woofer and crossover

does it not say atall in the manual?

Nah all it says in the manual is its there to adjust the tweeter 'level'!
The thing is, they've been in now for about three weeks and one of the tweeters just stopped working (gone open circuit). Bit worried cos atm theyre only running off the headunit, worried they'll pop when i amp them up!
Suppose it must be a one off faulty tweeter, as I've heared such good reports and they sounded awesome before it packed in.
No worries.

DLS are a very respectable make.. if one has stopped working maybe sent them back if you have the warrenty?

i think it would be amplitude, so you can adjust the ammount of hi's you wish to hear..

providint the amp has sufficient power it wont do damage to your speakers :y:

Yeah i've sent it back, I know they're a top company so not too worried about getting a replacement.
I've just found a circuit diagram on DLSs website. It looks like the jumpers just increase the series load of the tweeter, so must be adjusting the amplitude.
Cheers.

nice one..

i was considering a pair of DLS B5A myself.. one question.. seems the mounting depth is quite deep.. you had any problems with this mate?

mdf mounting ring, the u5's (old top line model) were an absolute mare to get in the doors

yeah was going to consider mdf ring

think im going for a set of rainbows now.. but still will be using mdf ring

coonper said his comps have 59mm mounting depth and the window just catches it. so with the rainbows 58mm depth i think ill put a mdf ring to pull it out 5 or 6 mm:y:

With my R5As i used a 12mm mdf ring. They're about 5mm clear. I had to chop the inside of the doorcard a little, nothing that can be seen externally tho.
I did a shitload of sound deadening/sealing using SS damplifier and bodyline. Well worth the effort, sound incredible and I havent amped them yet.

nice one.. ill be getting them within the next week. plan to sound deaden the whole door, and add an mdf ring to stop it catching on the window or whatevers back there lol.. amping mine too :D

Cool, make sure you seal/fully cover the inner skin too if you want good sq. Well worth the effort.

yeah im after SQ

when you say inner skin? which do you mean lol.. sorry to be a dunce on this kinda thing. just havnt been sure on how to sound proof doors effectively

outer skin = closest to the outside of the car?
inner skin = closest to driver / passenger? (bit which door card connects to)

do you reccomend sound proofing both inner and outer skin mate?

and shall i put it on the outside of the innerskin (facing outer skin) or facing the door card

sorry if that doesnt make sence

Yep you got it.

Firstly cover the outer skin (closest to outside of car) as best you can, its awkward getting your hands in there and I had to chop the damplifier into smaller sections and feed it in a bit at a time. And clean it as best you to help the sound deadening stick.

Next do the inner skin (closest to driver, door card side) obviously this is a lot easier to do. Still worth giving a good clean tho. Whats important is that you seal any holes/gaps on the inner skin to create an enclosure for the midbass driver, it's not the perfect soloution but good enough for me. Obviously dont block the drainage holes at the bottom of the doors, lol.

When deadening the inner skin make sure you stay within the confines of the door card. It looks dull if you got damplifier sticking out the side or bottom.

Paint/seal/varnish whatever, your mdf rings to stop them going mouldy.

When i get my replacement tweeter I'll be taking my door cards back off so I'll get some photos and post them up.

Hope it all goes well for you buddy.

Cheers buddy, I'll get some pics up soon as.
It's worth the effort in my opinion, I'm happy to admit I'm a bit anal with things like this, lol.

as they say.. "get it right the first time, and you wont have to do it again" ;)
