I've noticed a few spots of oil under where I park my car, I had a look under the car and the sump was oily.

The thing is, when I took my car to be serviced about a month ago the guy told me that the cv was split and would have to be fixed. So could the oily sump be due to that?

No... the CV joint is full of grease not oil, and that would show up under ur wheel arches and inside your wheels at the back. Looks like the sump gasket to me.

I had a feeling that it would be a sump problem. Is it just a case of taking it off and getting it resealed?

Ah well, looks like the garage will have to do it then. Any idea how much I'd be looking at?

Its a D.I.Y. money saver TBH, just take ur time and be clean about it, get the car up on ramps and drain the sump, clean off the surfaces and bingo. Re-fill with the correct amount of good quality oil and a new filter.

I wouldn't mind having a crack at it myself, but I haven't got any ramps to get it up on. The misses dad is a mechanic too so it'll be going to him.

Is it losing oil?

Maybe from where the filter isn't sealed properly, or a faulty filter. When did it start losing oil?

To me that needs more of a closer inspection. Could well be the crank shaft seal or cam shaft seal.

Or one of the more common places leaking from the edge of the headgasket.

Hard to tell in the pic as the oil always goes south.

I cleaned as much of it up as I could earlier on, so I'll have a look again tomorrow and hopefully be able to see exactly where it's coming from.

There's nothing wrong when I'm driving the car and i checked the dipstick which was ok, but I'd rather get it sorted before it gets worse.

It all seems to be towards the front (bumper) side of the sump. Hardly any on the other side. It's also mainly on the drivers side.

I don't think it's the oil filter because there's nothing coming from around that.

mine is like that too mate !
so is it a case of taking off the bottom of the sump by the 7/8 ish scews that are on and giving it a clean inside ???

Maybe so but it happens to be on the very side of the head where oil can weep out. Check your rocker cover gasket aswell, same sort of reaction with the cam covers on the 16v lump.

Best thing to do 1st is to de-grease the sump clean off with hot water then you`ll have a better idea where it`s coming from.

best thing to do is clean it all off and then take it for a drive and have another look, does look tobe the sump gasket though

Right I don't think it is the sump anymore. I've cleaned it up and taken it for a drive and it looks like it's coming from higher up than the sump and dripping down slowly.

It's coming from somewhere near where the alternator belt is:

Seems to be coming from the headgasket, the seal looks a bit cracked and there's a little gap between the seal and the metal underneath it (red circle in 4th pic).

So is it a case of getting new headgasket seals?

Rocker cover gasket... common, sorry to mislead you buddy.

This is easy to do, just take your time and mind you dont drop stuff into the engine, keep everything clean, cleanliness is absolute key here I have done one or two with total success. (might be a good time to clean up and paint your rocker cover the same colour as your car too)

No you dont need to go that far, its the rocker cover not the head, rubber gasket is available on its own from any good Motor Factor. About £10 if I remember rightly, maybe less.

but then that means you get the head gasket for an extra 4 quid with everything else and lets face it one day you will need it tbh!

Yeah but how hard is to fit all of that? I haven't got a clue with in the engine stuff to be honest.

It would be very hard for a novice to fit all of that and un-necessary at the mo anyway. There is somethin to say about the extra £4 thats true, but in my opinion, for now, just go with the rocker cover gasket. In my experience you will probably lose or damage the other stuff from the full Head kit in the time between now and when you need it, and you might never need it.

Yea and £3.50 is a good price if the gasket is made of good stuff and fits OK, sometimes better to buy from a dealer as all the new gasket can do if its no good is leak like a sieve. You pays your money etc...

So to replace it...

1. Undo the 2 header bolts
2. Take off the rocker cover
3. Remove the damaged gasket
4. Fit new gasket
5. Put rocker cover back on
6. Put the 2 header bolts back in and tighten up

How tight should I do the header bolts back up?

Sorry for being such a pain but I can't afford to mess anything up.

So to replace it...

1. Undo the 2 header bolts
2. Take off the rocker cover
Dont drop the spacers from inside the rocker cover.
3. Remove the damaged gasket
Clean both mating surfaces thoroughly, dont use a metal scraper on the engine or rocker cover, cleanliness is important to get a good seal.
4. Fit new gasket
5. Put rocker cover back on
Make sure you got the spacers in
6. Put the 2 header bolts back in and tighten up

How tight should I do the header bolts back up?
Dont overtighten, no need to, I cant remember the torque setting but then I bet u dont have a torque wrench anyhow.
Sorry for being such a pain but I can't afford to mess anything up.
Ur not a pain, fair play for havin a go.

Great thanks, I'll be going to buy the new gasket in 20 minutes.

I'll do a how-to guide so other people can see how to fix the oil leak, even though most people can do it already. It does seem to be a common saxo problem looking at old threads.
