just been watching a programme on tv and before they paint the car they wipe all panels down with a solvent/degreaser. the panels had been cleaned before they went and then after the degreaser the cloth was filthy. just woundering if you could do this after you wash your car would it make it look cleaner?

it sounds similar to what some detailers did a few years ago. they washed the vehicle with a detergent called "dawn" i think which was to remove all the previous layers of wax so that they could start the detailing process from scratch. if you were to use this technique i cant really see the paint panels getting damaged UNLESS the solvent that they are using is paint thinners in which case dont touch it.

imo when you clay or polish the car you are doing the same thing. do you know what the name if the solvent is? i may give it a try and see how much dirt comes off the panels.

It will be an IPA wipedown :y: Or Instant Panel Wipe... It would be something like Isopropyl Alcohol or the likes of Menzerna Top Inspection. What it does is removes all the oils and grease that stuff like polish, or anything else for that matter. Leaving you with a perfectly prepped and clean, ready for your last stage products, whither it be paint, sealant or wax :y:

Polishing wise - Its not necesary.. only if you're really trying to get the 'perfect' finish.

Spraying/Refurbing - Yes I probably would recomend it as it will help you get the best possible surface to bond with your nest stage.
