Got "around" 5k to spend but mum wants a small car (fiesta size) but dad wont be happy unless it's got some poke! Could probably just afford a fiesta zetec s tdci or a 1.9 astra, he will definitely be chipping it though without telling her. Just wondering if you guys had any suggestions we may not have thought of or any knowledge you could pass over!

why get a diesel? With the price these days arent your parents better getting a petrol?

a diesel will get 50+ to the gallon and although petrol is cheaper the diesel still just on the more economical side - Depending on the car i.e our saxo vtr does the same mpg as the freelander but a work mate has a Renult senic 1.5 dci and he can push it up to 55-60mpg!!

Get more per gallon so end up filling less, kinda makes sense, also allows much cheaper road tax apparently, fiesta zetec s tdci is only £35 a year which is a bargain!!

My girlfriends stepdad just bought a 2.5TDi VW Passat. That has some serious poke! Cost him £5300, 03 plate, FSH, Clean as you like!

Tell him to get a VW Passat/Bora/Golf 130BHP, they are fast standard so wont need to spend any extra on remapping the ECU.

130bhp diesel would be slow... technically against a VTS tbh...

(Don't shoot me)
206 HDi?
The mpg is between 45 and 70, depending on which engine you go for... nice cars to drive, comfortable too.
You can get a 1.4 HDi with 70bhp and a similar amount of miles to the gallon, or a 2.0 HDi with 90bhp and around 50mpg or so. Both are pretty safe bets and they have really good resale value.

I'm getting one of them, 600 miles to a tank sounds good to me

Get it remapped ;) last gains I saw were 70bhp to 110bhp for the 1.4 HDi and 90bhp to 125bhp for the 2.0 HDi.

Been looking at the golf tdi's, safe bet with vw i reckon, saw the top gear earlier on dave with the fabia vrs diesel against the mini cooper, bit of fettling and would be a pretty sound car!

That's what I said about the astra but the fiesta zetec s tdci is a good choice, however, I think the golf may just win this with it's poke and reliability, as well as good build quality!

Fabi VRs.
It's on a par with the 177BHP BMW 320d that's also on the drive, which makes me think the 130BHP may be a bit conservative.
Either way, superb little shed
