Hi People,
i am having a bit of trouble with my sub and amp
basically i bought a 12" vulcan sub ages ago and it had an amp attached to the back however when i connected it all to my vtr the protection light came on suggesting there was something wrong when i took it to an auto electrics place they told me the amp didn't work so i went and bought an 1800watt kenwood amp however i am having the same problem and cant afford to run to the auto electrics place every time i need help as they charge me for it. any one had similar probs with this sort of thing. i have tried a permanent live looped from the live to the remote and everything else me and my mates could think of but nothing seams to work. also anyone livin in the tamworth area willing to help. all help is welcome lol

Hi mate,
I live in coventry which isnt too far from you, and i'd be willing to give you a hand.
What i would do is...
1) Check the earth lead is well mounted, with a direct contact to bare metal
2) Check the polarity of the speaker cables, as some amps dont take kindly to being wired out of phase.
3) Make sure you're amp is capable of driving the sub. I.e. A 4 ohms stable amp will go into protect if you're sub is rated at 2 ohms.

Might as well post on here mate, as you will get more help!:y:
Im at work now, so forgive the delayed replies.
What model amp is it, and what sub do you have?
I wouldnt really want to meet you, as my car does circa 5mpg, so it costs me about £1.30 per mile, so obviously 10 miles to you, 10 miles back, thats nearly £25! Lol but by all means, come to mine and i'll have a look at it for you! See if we can stop the red light coming one!:y:
I also have lots of 4 gauge power cable which can help resolve these kind of problems!;)

well yeah then mine does bout 42 by the book if i drive sensible lol. so will defo be able to come to yours. it is an 1800 watt kenwood amp with a vulcan sub and vibe 6x9. what do you think of that. any good. however have never seen any numbers on the sub may be hidden behind the broken amp on the back of it. not sure. anything else you can recommend

Iirc the vulcan sub is made by pro-plus? Who tbh, are a cheap budget brand, but are a lot better than some of the brands out there. You can see them here and as you can see, the sub is £40 brand new. http://www.proplussound.com/vc.aspx
With regards to vibe 6x9's i dont rate them at all tbh. They lack any real depth and just sound hollow. Also, if the 6x9's are in the parcel shelf then they will sound awfull, as the air moved by the sub will be forcing pressure against the driver in the 6x9's, causing them to distort and possibly break.
Not sure which amp you are relating to though? If its this one, then its pretty good, although again, i dont rate kenwood, but if it does 1kw rms then thats good enough for me! Lol
http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/5745.html
However, you're sub is 4 ohms, so the amp is only going to be pushing 500rms into the sub, which is more than enough for the sub, but you are wasting half the amp's power tbh, so i would advise you to buy a new sub, which is of a dual 2 ohms configuration, and rated at a minimum of 650rms.

If i were you i'd buy the sub from www.caraudiodirect.co.uk.
They are pretty dam cheap, and i think they offer free delivery.
This would sound great powered from you're amp, and in the right box it will be bloody loud, with great quality!

whats with the link per post lol?
to get the best from your amp i would recommend something that it can power nicely like something that coonper has shown you. if your skint then either save up or buy a cheaper one with high enough power rating but it wont sound anywhere near as good as you could have it tbh mate.

go on caraudiosecurity like coonper said and have a look at their subs. they are well priced. you will be looking around the £100 atleast for something that will sound really good off your amp.

As said mate, you've got 1kw of power, which is a fair chunk tbh! That JBL sub and box you posted is very good, but its simply not handle 1kw worth of power, but saying that, that jbl sub is 4 ohms, so it would you're amp @ 500rms.
Would you be prepared to give up you're boot in order to have 2x12" subs? If so, get these...
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BOX-OF-2-JBL-GT4-12-1000W-SUB-SUBWOOFER-BRAND-NEW_W0QQitemZ320276214950QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item3 20276214950&_trksid=p3286.m14.l1318
If you run 2 of them you will be putting 400rms into each sub, which is fine, but if you wanted to be a real bass head, get 3 of them, show the amp a load of 1 ohm, and get 333rms into each sub, get lots of panel flex and more importantly, Fucking mega Bass!!!
Obviously 3 will take up you're whole boot, but if you put them in sealed boxes you will have plenty of space to pull this off!:y:
Even 2 of them will sound immense!;)

well to be faur anyway mate my sub at the moment as you said is 15 inch and in a box so i only have enough room for the amp at the side of it. my cd changer is screwed down at the other side but spose i could unscrew it. yeah would be willing to give my boot up i reckon

coonper i've just looked on the wiring diagrams and wondering if it makes a difference where the fuse is on the circuit as mine is in the boot not on the battery side of the rubber bung. does this matter.

Yes it does matter mate!!
The fuse should be as close to the battery as possible, cus if the wire were to get very hot you would get fire all in the car! But if you fuse it near the battery then the fire is in the engine bay and there is only a short amount of wire to worry about.
Definitely get that relocated!:y:

Nah, i cant see that bringing the red light on, its just good practice to put the fuse as close to the battery as possible.
I wreckon its an earthing issue! Where is the amp earthed to?
If you lift up the rear bench seat, on the passenger side you wil see a little black screw. Take it out, sand off all the paint around it so its all shiney bare metal, then earth the amp to that!:y:
Also, what gauge cable are you using?
seankc08
22nd July 2008, 11:15
is earthd under the boot catch but have had that checked and is said to be fine. dont have a clue what gauge cables am, using. just know that it is a fusion pack which i bought seperately for bout 30 pund summat like that. what now mate. i do appreciate all the help you are giving to me you know. what else could it be other than an earthin issue

you have probably got the live cable from your batt the wrong way round lol. with the fuse end at the boot instead of in the engine bay. swap it around like coonper said mate :)

wont be the power cable doing it. but you should change that around because it could cause fire in your car :O not sure what it could be. is it the clip light coming on?
