How do you know if ICV is knackered?

Hi, having rough idle problems with the VTS, i know this seems to be a common problem with the Idle control valve etc, i cleaned it earlier and no improvement, just wondered how do you know if they're knackered and therefore need replacing? Is it just trial and error? is it worth getting a new one or just assume its something else causing the problem

Get your car on a diagnostic machine,save you loads of money in the long run.

when mine went it would rev high then the engine would just cut out, cleaned the icv then it worked for a couple days before starting again, in the end i just got a new one from a dealer, been fine since.

cheers, got it booked in for diagnostics on thursday, (although not at citroen cos they claim its normal for vts's to shake about!)
