View Full Version : Deep front speakers

Hi peeps,

Just a piece of infomation which may be useful for some.

The front doors of saxos do not really permit very deep speakers to be mounted. I have now had two different aftermarket pairs and have worked out that up to 52 mm is a comfortable fit.

Generally speaking the higher the mounting depth of a speaker - the more it allows the cone to resonate and thus produce a lower frequency of sound, which is a complex way of saying the deeper the speaker (larger the magnet) potentially the bassier it will be. (but it is always worth comparing frequency ranges aswell)

Any speakers which are very substantial and thus are deeper than this will have the problem whereby the windows will not fully wind down - because they hit the magnet of the speaker. I have encountered this with my latest pair.

To retify the issue i used sound dampening on the door around the speaker hole to build up a layer of material which is flat - as the door has many contours. The reason for this was to create a flush surface so that i could then cut and install mdf spacer rings. These were 6mm deep rings that I made (or can be purchased pre made to size online) that sat between the speaker mounting face and the sound dampened layer. This created the effect of moving the speaker away from where the window came into contact with it previously and made a rattle-free, firm fixture point.

Good description, but as said, im sure its already been covered...

With regards to MDF rings, even if the spekaer is a shallow mount style, i still prefer to mount them to MDF as it supplies a firmer base so less resonance occurs throughout the door panel. Also, i screwed the mdf to the door using about 20 screws and lots of glue plastered all over the back of the mdf. Just for that extra reassurance!:y:
