this is a video of what happens when i turn my ignition:

This noise seem to be coming from under around where your install the graffiths quick shift on that gear link and doesnt seem to be turning anything just a grinding spinning freely sound. i duno if that is where the start motor is. I would maybe understand a lil more why this happened if someone could tell me how that start motor works e.g. what its connected to and how does it turn the engine etc.. ty
btw it going silent turned out to be my battery evn tho it wasnt flat i just charged it up some more and it made the grinding sound again

Starter motor is located at the rear of the engine about 1/2 way down under the inlet manifold.Need to jack the car up for easier access.

what is the problem mate is that the coil in the starter motor has completly gone! that needs to be changed! then it should run like a dreem! but go to a scappy to get it mate!
u will save loads of money! but another problem maybe the ignition wire mayb lose off the starter motor! so cheak that first!
good luck my friend!

well its prbz bust then cos it happened over like 10 seconds from perfectly starting up to it going like tht. i ran out of petrol on the car completley, its been running on fumes for a longgg time and when it finally ran out while it was started up. then i put some petrol in and just held the igntion for a while trying to fill the pipes etc :S thats when it ended. but thanks! i will check the wires when i can before buying one! strange thing is it had a brand new one on im sure of it :S repped!

urmm wll my mates wasnt! well i cudnt hear it over the exhaust noise lol
but i was just looking over it and the wire was off the motor so i just soldered it back on!
if when u turn the key there is no noise being made then it is probs the wire!

forget wa i said! lol
the wires are fine!
but the stating motor cogs are gone!
if u notice when u turn the key and let it go the cogs still grind for a few seconds!
so best thing to do is replace the starting motor! but cheak there isnt anything blocking it up! also if u buy 1 either get 1 from the scrappy or just get a reconditioned 1!

yea it sound like cogs grinding, what is the motor connected to? i could be tht the motot is fine and the other cog on the part its attched to is fucked?

well its conected to a dynamo! and i think the altinator! i am not quite sure!
best thing to do is to just get under your car and have a good look! once you find the starting motor you will be able to recognise most other parts!

I would say your starter motor has gone. If you think about it, trying to start the car for 15 mins means A LOT of use of the starter motor (they get VERY hot after a while). Something inside has probably burned out or something. If you are going to fix this yourself you will need to take the starter motor out to replace it, but before you do, the easiest way to confirm the diagnosis is to connect it to a battery once you have taken it out to see if it turns over (bearing in mind it may appear to work OK with no resistance on the cog).

well the starter motor was new and it wasnt 15 mins constant, it was like over a period of 15 mins for like15-20 seconds of holding the ignition well ile check that too :) come to think of it it kinda happened when my mate thought it was funny to try turning the ignition while in first gear, then it started to grind :S
