4th August 2008, 11:37
Anyone do it here?

Mate has just asked me if I want to work at the pub where he does.

It's pretty quiet throughout the week, just like regulars and then can be busy at weekends. He said I'd pick the hours, days etc you wanna work and they will work round Ruby.

He comes out with £60 a week extra for 2 nights work.

What do you reckon? Always heard it's good working in a bar.

I've always wanted to work in a bar.
I gotta wait til I turn 18 though.
My old mate at work works in a bar now though. She loves it. Much prefers it to sales assistant work as it's alot more social. :]

I say go for it!

i work at a club friday saturday before i started i wasnt sure whether id enjoy it but i absolutely love it!
if your busy you dont get time to think about not being pissed or being on the other side of the bar
just try it and if you like it stick at it if not tell em its not for you
i work in retail aswell as a bar work so i get the best of both worlds
hopefully when im more confident behind the bar and handling large sums of money id love to go into management
this is the club i work at:
tokyo project (http://www.tokyooldham.com/)

i work in a pub just like the 1 you described!
loads of people even have their own glasses!

its a good laugh.
you become friends with the regulars, so going to work isnt a huge hassle.
in a way, its sort of like 'networking'

and if your pub is anything like mine, its on the way into town so you get a few people poping in before a big night out.

we also show the football which is nice for me :y:

Personally i couldnt do it as its the wrong side of the bar. But i can see the plus points about meeting new people and boosting your confidence.

Go for it, beats sat in the house on an evening with nothing to do.

Karl
4th August 2008, 12:17
Are you doing it for the money? or that theres nothing to do.

as gay as this sounds,
by buying a 360, I've saved loads of dollar as I no longer really go out in the week.

It's good fun working behind a bar... I use to be a Bar/Restaurant Supervisor years ago... I even managed to do it with one arm/wrist in plaster. You get to know your customers and create good relationships with them and fellow colleagues.

Plus you get to stay behind after work and have a couple on the house!!

Chris :)

One of the best jobs i've ever done!
The 'Social' side of things is a giggle, meet some mint people through it.
Even got the occassional woman flashing boobs so i'd serve them quicker, it didn't work though ... lol

Just make sure you don't burn yourself out by burning the candle at too many ends!

Josh_24
4th August 2008, 12:51
i got told the same thing about not burning myself out but i enjoy it it may be tiring but its good doesnt help that i get in at 4am and have to be up for work at 6am either. redbulls my best friend at weekend

I've been working in pubs for a good two and a half years now, and can safely say that it's always been enjoyable.

Small locals-based pubs are the best if you just want a nice, quiet night... and 2 nights a week is just enough before it changes from an enjoyable way to break up your week to actual proper job status...

If you can make conversation and pull a pint you're fine.

Luke
4th August 2008, 15:05
Well pulling a pint isn't hard these days by looks of it, none of these old fashioned pumps anyway lol!

Not too sure about the conversation, suppose that'll come when I get more into it.

i've worked in pubs and bars all over the place, mainly when i was at college. It was the best fun i've had in a job, i meet loads of people and some great friends. Go for it!

Luke

Going to meet the boss on Thursday night after work.

Wish it could of been tonight, but fingers crossed.

Sophie123
4th August 2008, 15:34
P.s - handpulls arent that difficult either!
changing the barrels was always the bit i least looked forward to, but once you get the hang of it its ok....unless the cellar floods and you have to stand on the barrels...but thats another story.

Luke
4th August 2008, 15:37
Yeah, I can only see the barrel changing been the hardest tbh!

Sophie123
4th August 2008, 15:40
its not that bad once you have been shown how.
i find it a bit difficult sometimes because im not the strongest person in the worldand they can be pretty tough!

Evolution4589
4th August 2008, 15:43
Changing barrels is a piece of piss for draught stuff, just unclip the top and pop it on the new one, fill up the vial, make sure the float floats and get back to the front of the house... I can go to the cellar, change a barrel and be back at the bar in 30 seconds flat...

Ales are a bit more difficult, but again, it's just practise and experience, takes a little longer to do those if you're doing them properly (cleaning them through with water).

Sophie it sounds like you work/worked exactly where I do now... :D

Amiee
4th August 2008, 15:46
I worked behind a bar for a few weeks last summer.. was fun, had a laugh with the customers and I enjoyed being out the house.

Its a good way of building up confidence and getting to know new people as well as earning money :y:

Sophie123
4th August 2008, 15:47
i love the pub i work in, really nice, friendly atmosphere!
my boss told me to leave my car at home when i go in on thursday because its my bday on friday! haha

i always find stongbow is the biggest pain in the bottom!
we have this thing you have to pull and twist and it always takes me ages!

Luke
4th August 2008, 15:50
Any get drinks bought for them or get free ones? lol.

I'm doing it for money more than anything though. I'm needing new tyres for car, service in 2k miles and just general be able to buy extra stuff for myself & Ruby.

Sophie123
4th August 2008, 15:53
yeh get drinks bought for me all the time lol.

the boss said on day 1, if someone offers you a drink, either take for a drink and put it on your list for a time when your not working/end of shift...
or just keep a pound of their change and say you were gona put it towards a cola :y:

Hahaha is it the one that's got three little bits lopped off the outside so it's like a triangle but not?? I got one of those so very badly wrong once... thought I'd got it all linked up, switched the gas on and it exploded, very wet Sam.

Luke, it's really a good laugh and I do get drinks bought for me- not as many as the girls do, but I get my fair share. Sometimes get awesome tips as well.

Amiee

Sophie123
4th August 2008, 15:58
hmm, triangle but not....could be lol.
its a pain anyway.

i was in yday and the cellar got flooded, so much the water was to the bottom of the stairs and it killed the cooler.
so we has nothing on tap for about an hour and a half.
that made for a very lonely sophie because all i had was becks, pills and j2o's!

probably suicide if I'm in that damn town any longer than that.

I doubt you'll get cashin hand these days... most pubs are owned by big brewery chains or companies. You'll get your arsed taxed at 30% for a second job. sucks but at the same time, don't think of the money think more about the social opportunity - which to be honest I think is the bigger importance for you man :) I mean that in a good way :y:

It's all via BACs anyway mate, with payslip etc so it's all above board which I want anyway as I don't want taxman chasing me.

So you get charged more tax for the second job?

The extra cash would be nice, but the social bit of it is always good too.

I worked ina nightclub for 3 months before I packed it in. Long nights, not getting to bed until nearly 3:30am, getting spanked on the arse by random drunks, getting abused by random drunks. The smell of smoke by cigarettes and the smoke machines were too much to handle in the end.

Luke
5th August 2008, 13:45
Well I'll be working from 6pm - 11.30pm, so midnight by time I get in.

I can handle that for now lol.

Luke

Well I'm tired this morning :P

Worked till 11.30 last night, it was empty until 8pm then all of sudden it picked up. I had like 3 groups of people waiting at the bar and just me there. Ha!

Pulled my first pint OK, just gotta master the Glosch (sp) as it comes out rather fast so don't need to shake it to get an head on it.

Think I'm gonna enjoy it though.

I do irregular Friday/Saturday nights at one of the main pubs in town (also what I class as my local) And I love it!

The work is nothing really as long as you know who is next when the bar is rammed,
I get to chat to people, have a laugh,
Im getting better at the cocktails and the shooter shots,
9 times out of ten I go to the club after and end up meeting half the customers and probably get bought a drink,
if a hen party/group of girls comes in then the charm offence comes on to keep them in (last Sat I ended up knelled on the bar with about 7 women checking I had nuts haha)
I tend to get free drinks too and slowly drink throughout my shift.

If Im in drinking and they need someone to jump behind for 5mins then I do cos it's fun.

Amiee
8th August 2008, 08:59

Well Craig (mate) said it's best way to get chucked into deep end as it's the way you learn and he said I did well.

worked on a bar since the day i turned 18 (was glass collector first), it takes about one shift to get used to it, i'm so used to serving now i can pull 2 different pints at once and serve more than one person on the bar at one time, the biggest part i had to learn was where everything was on the till cos it's computerised and different items are on different pages scattered about

i hate workin on a bar now cos it means i have nothing to do during the day whilst all my mates and lass are at work and once they leave work i have to start, and in a small bar in a small town everyone knows everyone so i rarely meet new people and 9/10 new people are arsehole tourists, looking forward to full time work tbh

As T1NK3RB3LL said on first page...i do it...i do enjoy it...and take home something in the region of £50-80 a week. And as Ryan said...extra play money. I was employed to do 10 hours a week....im currently doing 15 and it doesnt bother me. Only thing that does bother me is, as T1NK3RB3LL said...my feet tend to hurt as I mainly do table service and constantly walking for 3-4.5 hours straight...maybe its the shoes im wearing...i could do with a new pair!

My first pint was a Guinness...was ok...now im used to it all...the manager trusts me behind the bar on my own etc...all good. I get paid monthly for the day-time job, and weekly for the Bar job...Bar job is my spending money for the weekend. Pretty soon i will save enough to go away for Christmas or something :)

Quite a good offer they made you aswell...by fitting in your shifts around Ruby....all is good....

I've met loads of people...and chat to all the locals etc that come in for the Poker Tournament and some have a drink with...everyones a winner :y:

not cool to flair in a pub mate, save it for cocktail bars. lad in my work (bear in mind it's a 241 restaurant filled with old people or jailbait kids) constantly does it, so irritating trying to serve people whilst trying to dodge flying fu***** glasses, he got a written warning for it cos he dropped one on the managers foot whilst trying to impress some girls he got pwned, now needless to say he's toned it down a bit, keep threatening to buy him some black ray ban wayfarers and call him tom cruise all the time

Well by sounds of it, I'll be by myself next time anyway which I'm OK with I suppose. I'm doing the same as you - the day job I have pays my loan, Ruby's nursery, Insurance and phone bill and then the pub is gonna be my fun money as such :)

still cheapest place to buy a pint. If there is a BAR where you serve alchol then it is a BAR as not everyone goes in to play Pool or Snooker...some go in to play itBox and Bandits all night...some go for a drink...which obviously means its a bar

this is what the handle on the bar to a cask ale looks like, if your tetleys handle looks like this thens it's on cask

whereas your keg handles (lager like your grolsch) looks like this (picture is drauhgtsmaster, best pic i could find)

ARGH Flairing about doing cocktails does my nut in. People just want the bastard drink imo Plus the quicker you do it, the quicker they drink it the quicker they are back to the bar.

especially when the dumb shit gets your bottle of corona out the fridge and flips it round his head then opens it right in front of you - DUCK FOR COVERRRRRR!!!!

Ah....now I remember lol.

It's all Keg mate.

ah it's a piec of piss then, just put the glass as far up under the tap as you can and tilt it, turn the tap on and let it fill, if the head is to much on it the punter will probs ask you to top it up anyway, just tell them you've never done one before unless they are a complete wanker they won't mind

And half a bottle wasted by fizz on the bar!

It's cool at times, theres a person employed by my company to teach others how to flair, but it's mainly in upper end bars they do it!

Some of the stuff which was done last night was amazing, felt well outta place as well. Women in proper evening dresses, blokes in suits worth a couple of k then me wearing jeans and a jumper lol

it's only cool when it's not your drink they're doing it with, or your not having to hide and duck for cover cos you have to work on a very small narrow bar whilst a rather cartman sized idiot throws bottles at you

Leave half to settle before topping up with more guniess

Others are the same

And the rare occassion you get someone asking for a shandy with guiness, john smiths, tetleys etc, flatten the lemonade first.
The lemonade is denser so the drink will just sit on the top.
Either whisk it up or fling it between a couple of glasses for a bit.

Bitter Shandy's Im shocking at, but that's cos they hardly get asked for.

As said with Guinness tilt the glass under the tap, let it flow to half way or to the line. Let it settle then top up.

With Bitter, you'll probably get a mahooosive head to start with but just get the punter to sip some out and top it out. They like it and it gets the pint right, plus you're not wasting anything.

Oh and if someone asks for a Guinness last when ordering a big round, you're legally entitled to walk round the bar and smack them.
