All you need to do is understand the it's a sci-fi film.

Freaked me out when I first watched it, was about 4am in the morning came home stood staring out the window and my mate just randomly popped up wearing a mask and a wooly top freaked the sh*t out of me... but I didn't get it neither, mind you I was half asleep.
