Anyone else find the power steerig is over assisted on the VTS? I didnt think so until my alternator belt snapped which put the power steering out of action, at low speeds it was a bitch but above 20mph Wow!!.. what a difference it made to the steering feel.. how much more connected you are to the tyre loadings and how it changes your driving style. It made the car feel like a go-kart. I found myself being far more delicate with my inputs and adopting a race over rally style. I loved it so much I decided to do some research into lowering the power steering assistance.

Rally design offer a variable power steering module for some rally cars so they can adjust their steerings power assistance for feel for different grip levels, wet/dry and different surfaces etc.. but its very expensive so I've decided to put my electronics experience to good use and build my own.

The speed sensitive assistance will still work as normal but you will be able to adjust the overall assistance to anywhere in between standard and off at the turn of a knob mounted on the dash and should be relatively simple to fit.

Gonna order the parts and get soldering in the next week or 2, I'll let you know how well it works once its been fully developed and reliability tested over a few months.

my saxo has had no PAS for over 3 years, parking was an arse but driving at speed was amusing.

haha so much nicer without PAS. Just try driving slowly with a bootful and 4 friends (and yourself obviously) ;) see how strong you really are :y:

But yes it does make you feel more connected with the road, and good luck to you designing this... and welcome to the forum.

I actually own a 106 Gti myself but my girlfriend has a VTS which I often drive, the power steering system is identical I believe?.. so the unit should fit the VTS too. Do you prefer having no PAS? I stll think it needs some assistance but its defo over assisted as standard IMO..

My cousin has a 172 Cup, nice car.. interesting to follow it, I can match it and sometimes even gain on it through the twisties but he pulls away on the straights above the ton. I think the standard 172 is better suited to bumpy british roads over the track orientated Cup version which seems very nervous especially when its wet.

vts and gti is 99% the same car bar a few little things, so PAS system shouldnt have any differences iirc.

i prefer PAS for a daily driver, but no pas when i want to really use a car and throw it about, its why i dont just have a daily driver lol
