View Full Version : Exhaust Rattle (Manifold/Cat Joint)

Hey guys,
Had the exhaust off a couple weeks ago and when i put it back on ive got an annoying rattle if i put my foot down.
If the car is stationary when i rev it, it sounds raspy (exhaust is a 2 box magnex system so there should be no rasp).
The rattly is a light/loose/raspy kinda noise so i tend to think its to do with the spring sorta bolt joints down there.
I noticed the spring on the bolt holding the manifold to the bottom of the engine was missing so replaced the spring & nut but its not made a difference.
Those little soft metal mesh kinda washers that go on the manifold joint, what are they for because iv noticed that they are gone now.
Anyone have any ideas, i know its a longshot but im fed up of the rattle, although its saving me a packed on fuel because iv only been going like 30% throttle and not over 3krpm for 2 weeks lol :(

Have done, took the joint apart and put it all back together again and put a new spring on the bracket to hold it to the engine, still does it though.

:bump:
Anyone have any ideas? Are those little mesh washers to stop rattles like this?
Anyone got any pics of how the manifold to engine bracket should look? Theres nothing in Haynes mentioning it.

Anyone have any pics of the bolt/nut/spring arrangement of the manifold-engine bracket from under the car at all? :)

where the manifold pipe meets the center pipe or decat pipe, inside the pipe there should be a rubber bung around the lip, which stops it from moving, ive got same problem! i need one now :n:

Its the joint between the manifold to the underside of the engine im talking about mate.
You talking about the mesh ring on the end of the decat/cat pipe (pictured below)

Hmm, well mines not that shiney anymore, i suppose changing the exhausts over could have unseated it & i'll need to plonk a new one in
Still looking for pics/diagram of the bracket if anyone has any

If your on about the downpipe kit, which includes the nuts, bolts, washers, springs and that mesh ring, that can cause a rattle. Sometimes a good way to stop this is to cover the outside edge of the mesh ring in copper grease and also each end of the springs that go onto the bolts. This helps it to stop creaking/rattling.
Hope this helps.

get a new fitting kit mate. mine used to do this all the time when i bought cheap gaskets but if you get a decent fitting kit then it should stop the creaking/rattling

Put a new kit on it yesterday and theres no change atall. Bloody annoying noise it is too.
I'm out of ideas on whats causing it really, 2 exhausts have made the noise so i think its to do with the manifold.
Now a new fitting kit has gone on and new spring and cup on the manifold/engine bracket. I hope this isnt just thesound of the rasp of having manifold & decat
Now i think about it when i put the manifold on i put the cat back on to, so this is the first time i've had the manifold & decat in place.
Anyone else heard of a funny raspy rattle with a 2 box magnex system, decat & 4-2-1?
