Well following djflipsaxos thread about his goldfish tank it seems that there are a few members on here that may need some help with their ponds, or fish tanks....well id just like to post up a thread saying that i am happy to help ANYONE with ANY problems, i have been keeping fish for 9years, and have worked in an aquaticshop for 3, ive kept everthing from goldfish to koi carp and guppys to stingray, so feel free to post a problem or question on here or PM me and i will try my best to answer, if anyone has any answers to posted questions feel free to post...
I dont know how much this thread will take off but i thought it was worth a try :D thanks

Well where i work we usually take them once they get to about 3/4s of an inch (big enough to sell) will your lfs (local fish store) not take them? chances are they wont give you any thing for them but they are out of your way?, if not you can always buy fish that will eat them?? how big is your tank/s?

Oh actually I have a question! I have recently moved from my parents house to my new gaf 50 miles away. I havnt had time to sort my tropical fish out yet so they are still at my parents. How can I get my tropical fish safely from my parents 50 miles to mine without their water getting too cold?

i think you bag them up, put the bag in another bag, seal it with some air inside, put that lot in a polystyrene box with a heat pack :y:

Oh nice one cheers, the journey takes about an hour in total, sometimes just over, as i have to get through a one way system in town which is a nightmare for stop/start traffic lights. Think they will be ok in there for that long? Do I bag them up together or seperatly?

Together as long as the bag is big enough. They should be alright for quite a while. People use the same method to post fish overnight and they don't seem to have many problems :y:

Or a place called trimar....deliver cheap to
Youll need a big tank, Dats (tiger fish) can reach over 2ft and is not uncommon to see them over 18" as for fronts, they can get over a foot to, they arent the best off mixes tbh, but with a big enough tank any thing will work....Dingas tank minmum....or a 6x2x2 for a school of fronts (best kept in a species tank)...
dinga still trying to find some decent sites...be a while since i bought online....lol..normally buy from work....
hope this helps you guys :y:

Those malawi's are nice mate.
I've got a Juwel Vision 260 which I keep Discus in :) (with 9 baby clown loaches, 18 neons, 2x snow flake plecs)
I also have a Juwel Rio 125 which houses various fish (Parrot fish, angel fish, Royal Plec, panchoe's...etc)
Have you had experience with Discus before?
Was looking for tips on them breeding as they're flirting an awefull lot... would be nice to make a nice sack of money as I'm currently watching close to £1,000 swimming about.... would be nice to make it back! (or bits?)

silvers are easier to house even tho the get bigger.....they are more flexible...mine bit its tail off once or twice lol....you need a 6x2x2 minimum for either...silvers can live in a 6x2 for life...altho bigger is better, limas are nice i had one...never saw it tho lol....dats, a silver arow and a bunch of clown loaches / limas is a stunning tank :D

Goldsax, ive just got home, was going to clean the snail out and ive looked in the tank, saw lots of little specks and have now realised the snail has given birth to lots and lots and lots and lots of tiny little snails and there are also patches of little white specks everywhere which looks like more little snails that havent hatched yet, like frogspawn or something.
I dont know what to do!! Help me!!
-Jason-

EssexHoney

But there are going to be loads of them. I was happy with one!! But this many is just crazy, im not even sure they will all fit in the tank when they are fully grown!!
Goldsax
7th August 2008, 16:35
Haha calm down :P....yes they are snail eggs....the only way to get rid of them is to let them hatch and then get either, some fish that will eat the snails (keep them down) or get a snail remover from your petshop....but all of them will go, even snaily im afraid....this is the problem with common snails...only need one and BAM....get a apple snail...they wont breed as easy lol ;) about a fiver and hes the size of a small plum seed...and bight yellow...u can see him lol hope this helps :y:

Goldsax - Do you rate HMA / RO water?
I've always used tap-water, sometimes treated with AquaSafe to de-chlorinate it a bit.
However we've had a new kitchen installed and the tap water in here is now "filtered" ... noticed it seems to give much better readings and slightly lower PH for some reason.
Reason I'm looking at RO water is that I had been told on UK Discus that it's like growing spree water for my Discus, as they're meant to grow alot faster "apparently" ... thought i'd ask :)

RO water is great for fish.....but filtered stuff it pure bollocks...your fish will die after a few water changes with that...the filter takes out EVERY thing good and bad in the water for fish...its pure....no good...aquasafe takes all the bad $hite out of the water...a filter takes good and bad...so keep to aquasafe or RO water ;)

Goldsax
7th August 2008, 20:04
Yeh things like that are a shame....where the hell are you going to keep a 8-10ft shark?? which needs to be constantly moving in order to breathe, people cant house a 5ft catfish which doesnt need to be constantly swimming, its a shame that these fish are brought into the aquatic market :( but if you have a 50,000 gallon tank go ahead and get a couple lol...

You're kidding me?
I've used pure tap water for 3 years, then started adding aquasafe, tested a water sample from my "filtered system" straight from the tap and it's even better, reads very little if any metals..etc
Dad has discus for 7 years now, born and bred on tap water only, no additions.

Majority of fish are... unless caught wild.
Getting a little off topic with some silly answers ;)
... So would you recommend RO is like a "steroid" to growing fast and big :)
Goldsax
8th August 2008, 12:27
Erm...in simple terms yes....tbh ive never used it in my personal tanks, i used to dechlorinte EVERY bucket and let it sit for 10-15mins before being added to my tank....but i use it at work, spec for the marines....its kinda of a more expensive route to start off with....but after a while the equipment (ie special filter) will pay off its self as fish will last longer and look and act healthier and bigger....but as for just adding tap water, it is really not a good idea, as tap waters chemicals can and will kill the bacteria in the filter sponges, thus starting from phase one (let tank sit for 5-7days with out fish etc) therefore this is why i am sayin it is not best, as it will introduce strain on the fish and balence of the tank :y: (www.monsterfishkeepers.com will tell you more )

Cheers for the quick info.
Although I've had no issues, neither has our local breeder / LFS as in the shops they take water out.. then put a hose in giving cold water :| .. weirdos. Still end up with top quality fish though in there...hmm.
I'm 4 years on with big, happy, never had a problem discus, I was just thinking in the means of trying some RO water to bring the little ones up a bit faster :)
Don't suppose you're clued up on the breeding with them?
They're being well horny b*stards... swimming up and down with each other... "kissing" each other... and now sitting aside and shaking body / fins at each other...
It's not just 1 on 1 btw... theres 12 discus in there... its atleast 3 at a time, LOL ORGY?
Goldsax
8th August 2008, 13:50
Well discus like any other cichlid, will not spawn in a group....there will be a pair, signs of pairing up involve lip locking, and shaking of the body like you described, once paird the WILL take over a courner of the tank, i have seen then take as much as 3/4s of a tank and let the other fish have 1/4 of the tank (15 other discus) best way to encourage them to lay eggs, is to remove them into their own tank ( once paired up) and have no gravel, a sponge filter, and a plant pot stood upside down (or invest in a breeding cone) Then let them be, once they lay leave them to it for 2-3weeks, then you can return the parents back to the main tank....this is only the basics if you want more detail PM me hope this helps :y:
