I remember something to do with the medieval wars etc
Basically it was a sign of surrender, or mutual respect. For exampled putting your shield away from your right hand and shaking, whilst keeping your swords in place. You then get people who shake with their left are just the opposite.
I'm pretty sure that's what it's all about, if not i've got a very vivid imagination :)

Gentlemans handshake means you must attempt to crush every single bone in the other persons hand

Similar to Bark.
You would hold your shield in your left arm and sword in your right. You would put your sword back in it's holder to shake hands.
Also there is nothing worse than a weak handshake.

Exactly so why ask? :P
I also hate people who shake either very weak or overly firm.
Was funny when I was away in Zante, this tout was HUGE! and would always try a crushing hand shake then to drag you into his restaurant. My friend a brickey so has a very strong grip, decide to play him at his own game, had him yelping like a little girl!

It actualy started off being a sign of not trusting the person you are meeting.
The shake would start at the armpitswith an open hand curled around the top of the arm slowly coming down the arm till both hands met then shook.
Doing this each person was able to feel the whole arm and could feel if there were any wheapons attached.
The handshake is thought by some to have originated as a gesture of peace by demonstrating that the hand holds no weapon
