I can get my alloys shot blasted at work ...is this a good thing? I want to paint them black. If they were shot blasted, what would need to be done next, could I just paint them at work or would I need to do all the primer/sanding/painting/laquering etc. We paint steel frames where I work but I don't know if they undercoat them or use a special paint (not my department).

shot blasting just takes them down to the bare metal mate.

if you shot blast them you would defo want to apply alot of primer, high build primer, a good few coats of each then a good few coats of paint.

if shot blasting, may aswell get them powder coated aswell.

Cheers mate ...not quite sure what powder coating is though  I'm gonna ask at work tomorrow how they paint stuff, I know everything is made, then sand blasted to clean it up, then painted ...just not sure how well lol, or if they just stick paint on. I guess they must use some sort of primer on the bare metal.

powder coating is better than spraying them imo.

it is better but if you scuff them you have to start from scratch you cant just touch them up like paint, also if the moisture gets under when they are scuffed it may begin to lift. powder coating is good if done right if it gets too hot it just chips off and you cant just touch it up in your garage on a thusrsday evening before the weekend starts!!!

you will need to etch primer if you are refurbing them from bare metal....http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1-x-A-sol-Acid-Etch-Primer-Galvanised-Steel-Aluminium_W0QQitemZ290180468150QQcmdZViewItem?_trk sid=p3286.m20.l1116
think thats the stuff you need....and read this guide http://www.saxperience.com/forum/showthread.php?t=126211, he stripped the paint off first but he used etch primer before he did his layers of primer......good guide
