I was blind in both eyes for a few days last Summer - I wear contact lenses and also have hayfever. For some reason I had a severe allergic reaction to pollen which led to an eye infection. As you may gather, contact lenses are a breeding ground so we think pollen contaminants on the lense contributed to the infection. Anyway, it started off as red, itchy and tired eyes so the lenses came out. Normal hayfever eyes really. The following morning I had what appeared to be sleep gluing my eyes shut; the next day it was more like conjuntivitus. Not being afraid of conjuntivitus, I didn't book a Doctor's appointment as you can get over the counter eyedrops. The next day, I pretty much can't open my eyes. The light burns my eyes when I did open them as much as I could (a fraction), but everything was blurry. A call to the Doctor referred me to the hospital. The hospital referred me to the Doctor. The Doctor referred me to an Optician. An Optician referred me to the hospital. Finally getting to the NHS Walk-In Centre the Nurse can't open my eye to look in them - they battle to stay closed, and as before any light burns.

Now you're probably wondering how I managed to use the phone, or get to the walk in centre. My ex-girlfriend actually did something nice for once and helped with this. She did forget I couldn't see and lead me into a lamppost, but I digress. Now, having one Nurse yank your eye lids apart whilst another chucks in some local anesthetic isn't my idea of S&M. Turns out one or two drops wasn't sufficient - they used a whole bottle of the stuff in my eyes before I could open them fully. Looking in my eye the Nurse told me it was crawling with bacteria and germs and whatever other microscopic fiends cause an infection. I was given two bottles of magic eye cream, and told to bugger off.

After a couple of days of junking up on eye cream, blurry objects became clearer and I could withstand the light (moving from eyes closed, to open a fraction, to fully open behind sunglasses).

You really do not appreciate how valuable sight is until you lose it, even for a while. Partial blindness is better than total blindess, but how does this affect your driving? I feel for you, I really do.
