hi guys,
after getting my renewal through for the gti, i did abit of investigating and it is a possibilitie that i could insure a impreza 2000 turbo (grp 17 ins), now i know they aint the all singing all dancing wrx or sti spec, but has anyone had one and or been in one to comment what they are like?? what is the performance like and the fuel economy?
discuss....

Oh yes I can comment
Used to have a 2001 uk turbo 2000
Was running about 270 bph
Love to drink Vpower......doesn't help When the UK model run rice to start with.
With the right mods you can have an awesome accelerating car and that famous boxer engine burble
Running costs are high, I have the oil changed every 3k with millers oil and the plugs down ever 6k miles. Always warmed up and cooled down
If you wanna know any techincal stuff or what decent mods to do give me a shout

As Lee said... repid with the right mods (old neighbour had a very quick one)
Performance = Great
Economy = Shit
Grin Factor = Massive
Penis = Tiny

small penis eh?? best stay clear... but really are they any good like, i bin in an sti import and that was immense. whats the general fuel economy on one of them like, and are they worth getting rid of the gti for when you look into insurance and fuel costs.
Tupps
17th September 2008, 09:48
Performance will be massive - if you can afford to stick V-power in a car that's gonna return about 19-20mpg then do it
Best off asking leeroy as he's had one and spent money on mods etc
leeroybrown
17th September 2008, 09:52
STI will feel very quick with its short gearbox and its VF turbo
Can get turbo 2000 to 300bhp if you look around
Decent exhaust
TD04 Standard wrx turbo upgraded into a hybrid
Ported headers
FPR
Intercooler lift kit
Andy Forest remap
Also depends on what 2000 model you get.... 99 upwards is the best to get...longer inlet manifold, brembo brakes and stronger bottom then <99
Fun factor is immense, just the running costs
Robb

Personally Id only have the STI but thats not to say the rest of them arent good.

IMO there far from the best car you buy if your looking for something jap and turbocharged.
In stock form the UK spec cars are slow, the jap ones are better, mine drank fuel like nobodys business, and didnt give me that much of a grin factor, at the time i had a 200sx only running pretty much stock power, and an MR2 running about the same, both of which made me smile more than the scoob.

i know they aint they best turbo charged jap car, im looking for summet like that that is insurable, with them being not in the highest insurance bracket, i thought they would be a sound purchase. seems like i have opened up a can of worms here. RCD, so u say the uk spec cars aint that quick, what bhp they running stock compared to the jap ones?? and also what other jap turbos can be bought under that insurance bracket other than turbo'd superminis (ie starlet e.t.c)

Does it have to be Jap ?
Astra Coupe Turbo?
Better on insurance - Quick as standard and VERY tunable, My old coupe turbo is currently at 295bhp and 340lbs of torque
leeroybrown
17th September 2008, 10:03
They aint as quick as the UK ones are de-tuned to 212
Where as the jap ones are either
240 or 260...and they are easy to spot tbh
280 but thats an sti

UK turbo 2000 are 212 bhp....as in the classic shape you could not get a wrx uk model
WRX Jap models can be either 240 or 260

i had limited edition gravel express wagon import had wrx engine loved the power hated the fuel bill and tbh the good dont out weigh the bad mr2 turbo's are much more fun honest get the right mods and your drifting mate they cheaper to insure and run i do miss the boxer engine growl tho hehe
thats why i am sticking with the fez st its n/a cheap to run and with the right mods will soon see off scoobys anyway couple of grand under the bonnet at pumabuild and well over 240bhp in a ford tin can lol....and i missed havin a saxo they are sooooo much fun

4-4.5k should be able to pick up a decent impreza
Mine was a 2.0 Z20LET Coupe Turbo... 152mph as standard
Mate of mine has his running at 242bhp - thats after spending £500 on stage 1 kit
My old coupe is currently runnign at 295bhp and 340lbs or torque.... pretty impressive for a vaux
Only turbo i'd go for now would be Vag or Jap
leeroybrown
17th September 2008, 10:21

As leeroy said the UK spec ones are detuned, i thought they were 215 but leeroy knows more about them than me and he says 212 so i'll fly with that :)
My personal opinion on the jap car scene is that the 200sx is your best bet, s14+ running the rb20 engines are insurance group 16 i believe, and were much less for me to insurance than my MR2 or my subaru. the MR2 is group 20, im unsure what the scooby is leeroy will be able to help there
i think the 200sx gives the best balence between fun and cost, there very economical if driven off boost and 300bhp is easy to obtain.
They also tend to be very reliable and parts are easier to get hold of than a block of cheese!
Ross
leeroybrown
17th September 2008, 10:23
Group 17 but some companies have them higher
200sx is a good car.....but its rear wheel driven where as the scooby is 4x4 and can be very tricky in the wet....ulitmate drift car though

dont rule out mr2s as they do put a smile on your face when driving it. ive spent very litttle money on my mr2 and its up to nearly 300bhp already. my one eats uk subarus easily. ive had a few race against me on the strip and i left them for dead.
i do love the sound the subarus make tho

Look for ones that dont knock there brains out
Usual Stuff really, if they turned with lots of mods etc......make sure the fueling etc has been changed to mapped...one of the main things scooby go pop for.
Make sure the turbo doesnt smoke on start up on when in the power range
Check rear archs as they can rust.
Check for usual body damage and paint...lot of people import smash scoobys and fix them up over here....can be really dodgy

deffo get one mate we have a blob eye wrx ppp as leeroy said you can produce massive power with the right mods.
my dads mate has a classic import on a standard turbo running a safe 285bhp with a vf34 turbo it could run 330bhp but most likely do 10mpg.

Got one mate up in Harrow with a UK Turbo 2000, very nice motor, although interior isn't all that. Grips the road like a leech though, very good... And that flat four burble is immense, reminds me of an old school muscle car. He prefers the high pitched wail of my VTEC funnily enough, but I'm in love with the low, grunty burble lol.
Very nice motors mate the Turbo 2000's, and they go very well, both UK spec and import.
